So, we have had this vacuum for well over a year now and it still works beautifully! We havent even had to change the belt yet. With a little bit of maintenance we never had any issues with belts smoking or plastic parts melting. Aside from making sure the level is set high enough for the floor it is on we also clean it once a month, hair and stuff builds up. Now we have only one dog, a pittie girl, and they have exceptionally short hair (less than 1/2") if you have dogs that have longer hair then maintenance on the vacuum should probably be more often. We also have 7 Budgies in an extra, extra large aviary and are fixing to take in a pair of cat siblings. For us right now, a wipe down of everything inside and out with clorox wipes works great, including wiping where the belt is as pet dander/hair and bird dust/feathers builds up. We absolutely LOVE this vacuum cleaner, and use it daily. It has made a huge difference if the speed of our daily cleaning routine as it is so much more thorough than a broom and dust pan on the hardwood and switches to rugs and back again seamlessly. Penny S.: I like the weight of it but the plastic handle is really cheap. The suction was fine but the belt got stuck after two short vacuums and got clogged and smoke came out of the base! The spin brush stopped working and now I am already going to have to replace the belt. Since this vacuum was marketed for pet hair, I would have thought it was better made than this. I will think twice about buying a Bissel next time. Too bad🙁

John Mith: Update2: With some age on this Vacuum it's not just the hair that's a problem. The design of the belt system is really terrible. I have never owned a vacuum with such a poorly designed brush system. After going through the 5th belt I have decided this is getting really old really fast and probably will replace this vacuum early. It's a shame too because it has great suction. The brush system just can't handle the hair because the belt is exposed to the air intake. If you like spending time changing belts and spraying air freshener to cover up the scent of burning dog hair and rubber when you vacuum this is probably just the vacuum for you!

Update: With some miles on it sucking up husky hair I discovered a design flaw. It's not a deal breaker but important to understand if you have a long haired dog. Over time hair wraps itself around the drive shaft for the beater brush assembly and eventually dislodges the belt. I thought my belt had snapped and bought replacements only to discover this in my unit. Repair takes about 5 minutes so it's not a big deal. You probably want to get some replacement belts as the unbroken belt did seem to be a bit...
