Sandra Forbes: Curiosity drove me to try this spice. I’m not familiar with Chinese or Vietnamese cuisine and kept running across this product in certain recipes. I also had doubts about anise (licorice) as licorice is one of my least favorite flavors. I did try 5 Spice tonight on a dish that was lacking in flavor and was I surprised. The anise wasn’t overpowering and I’m almost certain that I’ve tasted this before while eating out at a Vietnamese restaurant near our house. The spice gives lot of depth to the flavor — not something I was expecting. If you are experimenting with the new flavors be sure to try this one even if you think you might not like it.
