Scott Schiefelbein: As a novice home brewer, I'm looking for anything that can make the process simple - the terror of making a stupid mistake and ruining an entire batch of perfectly innocent home brew is powerful. One feels like those innocent mistakes will occur when you're distracted. The answer is simplicity - eliminate the distractions and your brewing will benefit.

Enter the refractometer. This tool allows the user to quickly measure the "original gravity (OG)" in the "wort," which in the home brew context is the glorious soup you've created when you boil your grains and hops for an hour or so, and you've cooled it down quickly (I'm looking at you, wort chiller, and saying thanks). The OG measurement effectively measures your potential alcohol in your wort by measuring the sugars in relation to the water in the mixture. This is essential because if you don't have enough sugar in your wort, your yeast will not have anything to feast on, and yeast feasting is what creates the alcohol.

A standard method of measuring OG is to use a hydrometer, which requires the user to put a healthy draw of wort into a cylinder (you'll have flashbacks to high school chemistry class) and drop in your...

NickFerg2: This is a great product that is a huge help for home brewers and wine makers. Super easy to use and crazy accurate. A great product and the case helps protect it.

Kenazz: Very easy to calibrate. Much more convenient than a hydrometer (I broke my hydrometer that’s why I tried this). Reading this refractometer was okay but the measurement line was not sharp and combined with the very small markings for 10,000ths makes reading to 0.0000 not possible. Overall I am pleased with the device.
