Amazon Customer: soft side up, back side has little silicon or some sort of non-slip material in a pattern on the back side to keep it from sliding off the bed, I have an older kitty, so accidents happen... the first few accidents beaded up on the surface, after repeated accidents, it does soak into the material, but not through to my bedding underneath. a great way to help protect the bedding.
