YC: I haven’t actually read this but giving it 5 stars for my just turned 12 year old who loved this book! Have been trying to get him to read independently for so long but couldn’t find anything he could get into until I came across this. It’s the first novel he’s read alone and he flew through it, begging to stay up a little later for just one more chapter every night.

Derek Chalmers: "This book was very well written and I really like Alan Gratz." My son asked for this book specifically to do his most recent book report on. He loves this author and has asked us to get him "Ground Zero" for Christmas. It's not easy to get kids excited about reading actual books with the ease of access to "entertainment". That's speaks volumes to have a young person request new books and look forward to reading and re-reading them

Glo S: Bought this for my 12-year-old neighbor boy who doesn’t like to read. Have been having him read the book aloud to me and we have truly been enjoying it. It holds his attention very well. The author has developed the characters to make them relatable and has also given interesting historical details to portray an accurate view to actual significant places in this fictional but realistic account of events. The author is a good storyteller who seems to understand the age group of his audience. It is has been wonderful to hear my doorbell ring and see my young friend standing there with the book under his arm and WANTING to read!

E. Bennet: My 9 year old was completely entrhalled by this book. It's rare that he sits for hours with a novel and reads until he finishes it. He will read encyclpedia type books for hours, but longer prose is not something that has captivated him... until now. He finished the book, said it might be his favorite ever, and immediately wanted to look at Gratz's other titles. He loved the different points of view and noted that it was great to see a book about WWII action that included female characters like this one does. He is pretty well versed in D-Day and WWII history so that might have helped him connect so quickly, but this was a "couldn't put it down" book for sure! We cannot recommend this enough!

Love Retail: My son selected this book to read with his school instructional support as a means to mimic a high cap program. My son likes to read books on this topic, which I find a little depressing and a little dark...but listening to the thought provoking conversations that tutor and student had over ZOOM....this is highly recommended. I did not read the book, but both tutor and student enjoyed reading it. They were a little sad to move to another book. The conversations that I overhead did a wonderful job of providing historical references (which I find lacking in his schooling so far), portraying how the characters FELT, what motivated them, and in general connecting my son to a world far bigger than greater than within our Covid quarantined city. Not sure how much of this wonderful learning experience was based on the talent and experience of the tutor, but ALLIES provided content that was educational, emotional and allowed the tutor to delve deeper, connect ideas, draw inferences and start predicting outcomes. She was trying to teach him to immerse himself in the reading....not just reading for a reading log.
This was a very successful 'book club' for my son.
