Kathryn K. Sanders: This was a good review of Abraham Lincoln, but it was a it light on the Civil War. Specifically, there is no mention of General Sherman and his march to the sea, which was a significant part of the war. As usual with Hourly History, I learned some mew things, eg that Lincoln did not expect to win a second term , and overall, I was glad I had read the book.

Israel Drazin: Many people recognize that problems addressed during the American Civil War have not yet been sufficiently resolved. They also recognize that much can be gained in many ways by understanding the life and death of Abraham Lincoln. In just 48 pages, which can be read within an hour, Hourly History gives readers important information about the 16th president that people should know. The history is easy to read and very enlightening.
Lincoln was in his time the most reviled president in American history. There were a multitude of vulgar attacks in newspapers. Many insults were heaped upon him. He was caricatured is disgusting ways. In this book we read about his early life, his election, his concerns about being assassinated, the divided country, not only between north and south, but even in the north itself, and what helped him succeed. There was doubt if the country could survive under his presidency. Yet, today, he is considered the best American president. This book helps us understand why.

Tigerlily64: So often people want to learn about famous historical figures but do not have the time or patience to read a long book. Here is an example of a short book full of facts, a book that is both informative and enjoyable to read. The publisher, Hourly History LTD, specializes in these short books that most people can read in about an hour’s time. There is definitely a place for concise history books like this one.
Abraham Lincoln was one of the most hated Presidents during his time in office. He grew up poor and was raised on the frontier, a rough, hard life. Lincoln only had 18 months of formal schooling. Yet, his personality, his sense of humor, his ability to tell a good story, his poetic sense of language, and his discipline in educating himself led him to the Presidency.
George Washington grew up with privilege, wealth, and a good formal education. He was a general and war hero during the Revolutionary War and an easy choice for President of the newly formed United States of America. He was loved and admired during his Presidency.
Yet, today, despite their vast differences, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington are highly revered as our two best Presidents....

Katy Ryan: I really noted reading this book. It was well written, and I really liked the set up. The chapters were short, but there were also sub chapters which I really loved because i hate stopping in the middle of a chapter and I was reading while my 7, 2, & 1 year olds were playing, so that gave me plenty of places to be able to stop and continue again later. Had I been able to sit down and read from start to finish this definitely would have taken under an hour, which is great for moms because I can't tell you how many times I have stopped reading a book because I just don't have time to read! I am not a big history nut by any means, and I found this book extremely interesting, with many facts that I can share with my 2nd grade class when we study and read about Lincoln!

trancelucence: Sort of a Cliffsnotes version of Lincoln's life. Extremely well written and peppered with interesting facts. Many long and detailed works have been written on Lincoln's extraordinary life. This may be a good alternative for someone without the time or inclination to read a weightier tome. As it's intended as a brief and concise summary, it of necessity touches only briefly on issues that others have written entire books addressing. I tend to be biased- have read several books on Lincoln, am fascinated by the man and the details. I do take issue with the notion (reiterated by Freeman) that Lincoln had but one driving force in life- the preservation of the union. I believe preservation of the union was secondary to his all-consuming, abiding passion of ending the abomination of slavery. He couldn't very well allow half of the country to secede with slaves and slavery intact. Moreover, he could have easily preserved the union by allowing the status quo regarding slavery to stand.
But an excellent summary overall. If it whets your appetite for more I highly recommend Abraham Lincoln: The True Story of a Great Life Volumes 1 and 2 (Illustrated) , one of Freeman's sources....
