Brittany: "I Survived the Battle of D-Day, 1944" by Lauren Tarshis is an exceptional addition to the "I Survived" series. As an avid reader and history buff, I found this book to be one of the most captivating and well-researched accounts of the historic events surrounding D-Day.

Tarshis masterfully weaves together a captivating narrative centered around the experiences of a young boy named Paul, who finds himself amidst the chaos and danger of one of the most significant battles in human history. Through the eyes of Paul, readers gain a unique perspective on the bravery, resilience, and sacrifices made by the soldiers and civilians involved in the Battle of D-Day.

The author's attention to historical accuracy and detail is commendable. Tarshis seamlessly blends factual information with a compelling story, allowing young readers to both learn and empathize with the characters. The vivid descriptions of the war-torn landscapes, the relentless sounds of gunfire, and the overwhelming fear and uncertainty that surrounded the battle make this book a truly immersive experience.

"I Survived the Battle of D-Day, 1944" is not only educational but also emotionally charged. It...

mekal: My son is 9 and this is one of the first books he's picked up and read without me having to encourage him to read something. 5 stars for that alone.

I've only read the first few chapters myself, and it's got a couple of dark passages, but it is a book about D-Day, so that should not be a surprise. Anyways, if a tiny bit of shock value is what it takes to spark an interest in reading, I think it's totally worth it.

thorsprincess: I have not read this book, but I’ve read a few others in this series with my granddaughter. She came to visit me at almost age eleven, struggling with reading and undiagnosed learning difficulties. She was embarrassed and frustrated and ready to give up. She was definitely not reading for any pleasure! She had tried reading children’s fiction with some help, but the stories didn’t hold her interest—even when I read them to her. I worked with her every day for three months using a 3rd grade curriculum, doing lessons aloud, practicing spelling, vocabulary, reading (and arithmetic!) in colorful and well-organized workbooks. It became obvious that she preferred non-fiction or stories of survival and adventure. Our first trip to the library nearly made me cry. She simply wouldn’t look at books. They were too intimidating. We went to the bookstore, where she found these books in the edge of the children’s section. We read the first two aloud—taking turns reading. By the third, she was doing all the reading herself. I’ve sent her many of these books since then. She loves them and now enjoys reading for pleasure. As well, she has become quite a scholar. I recommend these...
