Zena: I love the I Survived series of books because they captivate young readers and provide an interesting storyline. The Battle of Gettysburg complimented what my daughter was already learning at school so I thought it was a good option to keep her interested in learning more about it. The books are historical fiction and can be suitable for grades 2-6

lyvaille amel: Bonjour, un livre très intéressant, à travers des personnages fictifs, on saisit bien la situation de l'époque, la guerre civil entre le nord et le sud, facile à lire même pour quelqu' un qui a un niveau moyen en anglais.

MARK D DINGLE SR: I liked this book because it talks about the hard times during the Civil War. I like the entire series and enjoy how she talks about history in all of her books.

The story starts off with two kids named Thomas and Birdie. They are on a plantation in the South and they decide to run away after hearing two men talking about buying Thomas. Thomas decides to run away with his sister to avoid being separated from her. As they are running away, they find two rebel soldiers holding captive a union solder. Thomas decides saves the union soldier by throwing a skunk that sprays the rebel soldiers in the eyes. The union Soldier then takes Thomas and Birdie back to his camp where his fellow soldiers are stationed. Thomas and Birdie start helping the union soldiers out with their needs. After two days have passed, the union soldiers marched to Gettysburg Pennsylvania for the big battle. Thomas and Birdie are told to stay at the camp with some of the union soldiers. Thomas asked the union soldier delivering supplies if he could come help deliver the amo to the union soldiers at battle. Once they arrive, their wagon is shot by a cannon and Thomas is forced to run out...

MiracleBaby'sMom: My daughter became interested in the "I Survived" series because her 2nd grade teacher read the book to the class. (She wanted the book for her own and wanted to start "a collection".) Because the second graders had not been introduced to "History" yet, the book served as a great introduction, especially for children who think the world revolves around them! :) I have to say, my daughter was "on fire" for these books and can't get enough. It was great to see the excitement in her eyes - like a new world was opened to her! This book was written as fiction, from the eyes of a slave boy who, with his sister, gets away from slavery and falls into the arms of the a Union regiment. He shares his experiences on the battlefield and the story has a very happy ending. The bloody battles are not too detailed for children, however, they get a taste of the Civil War. My daughter didn't know anything about this war between the states, but is now interested in it and in History. It's a great book for any age. She is now reading "I Survived" the Attacks of September 11, 2001. It has opened a great discussion about that event in our household - happening only 3 years before...
