James N.: You've probably heard it or seen it written, but please let my voice be added to the chorus: Berserk is manga perfection. There's a reason it's the number 1 rated manga on sites like My Anime List and Anilist. It's an epic, beautiful, brutal, nuanced story of hardship, of overcoming hardship, of the power of companionship, and of what it really means to dedicate yourself wholly to one goal. The writing, especially the character writing of the protagonist Guts and the antagonist Griffith, is superb. Guts is one of the most perfectly and fully realized characters in all of fiction and seeing him develop and grow across the series is one of the most satisfying that I've experienced regardless of the genre or medium of the story. The world-building and creativity that is on display in how Berserk's dark medieval fantasy functions first as a seemingly normal medieval theme with only a few hints as to supernatural things bubbling under the surface.

Berserk cannot be talked about without mentioning Miura's incredible artwork. While Deluxe Vol. 1 has by far the weakest art of the whole series, it's still really good. Miura really knows how to frame dynamic action and how to draw...
