Turns out Brazil nuts from Bolivia are very low in selenium. There are studies online showing where selenium is high. Mainly Brazil. Not worth the cost. Fresh and flavour was good but I could have eaten cashews for all the nutrition they have. Disappointed. If you want to buy nuts high in selenium, they have to be grown in soil high in selenium. That is Brazil, not Bolivia!

Lorna: These expensive nuts are a bit dry. I have never had Brazil nuts that I needed to drink water with to be able to swallow them. I suspect that they may be a bit old.

kar: One of the best tasting nuts I have ever eaten; Brazil Nuts have now surpassed Almonds on my taste buds. Brazil Nuts are so delicious that I am often tempted to eat more than the three per day that I have set as my limit. I set this limit to avoid possible selenium toxicity, which I read online could happen from eating too many Brazil Nuts in one sitting or on a regular basis. I also regularly consume other foods with selenium for health reasons.
In order to do this review some justice I decided to eat a couple of Brazil Nuts from a 5-oz bag of Brazil Nuts, by Hines Nut Company (expiration date 06/18/18), which I bought from Walmart. (So, today I ate about six Brazil Nuts.) I am glad I did, because I now know to NOT be buy anymore of the Brazil Nuts by Hines Nut Company. The Food To Live Brazil Nuts are a whole lot fresher & crunchier. To be fare, it's possible that I got a bad batch from the Hines Nut Company. However, I have bought other nuts from Food To Live before and have always been pleased with their quality.

mookerblu: These are literally sitting on my desk as I type this review. Love these nuts! I can't find them in any store locally, but almost prefer them being shipped right to my door. The only other time I have had Brazil nuts, is around the holidays when the "Bag o Nuts" that you have to shell yourself comes around. These are the nuts that are in the big brown, crescent shaped (ugly, elephant skin looking) shell. Nobody usually eats them because they are hard to shell, but they are so good! They are "Meaty" and have a different texture than cashews or peanuts. I bought these nuts because I've started to hear more about the nutrients they provide, and I'm not a HUGE meat-eater (although I love steak!), and don't eat a lot of fish either.
I have no problems with this particular one, other than the cost being so high, but that is typical for these nuts. I have only had one nut out of half the bag that was "bitter" and that was only because there was a lot of the skin on the nut itself. I signed up for the monthly delivery for one bag, but I think I will change it to 2 bags... maybe 3!

Tribulation Exodus: Brazil nuts are the best way to add selenium to your diet. Selenium is a trace mineral that is essential to good health but required only in small amounts. It is used in creating important antioxidant enzymes that help prevent cellular damage from free radicals. Free radicals are natural by-products of oxygen metabolism that are seen to contribute to the development of chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease. Selenium is also critical for proper thyroid functioning and plays a role in the immune system. The mineral selenium has been shown in multiple studies to be an effective tool in warding off various types of cancer, including breast, esophageal, stomach, prostate, liver and bladder cancers. "It contributes towards the death of cancerous and pre-cancer cells. Their death appears to occur before they replicate, thus helping stop cancer before it gets started, and has also been shown to aid in slowing cancer's progression in patients that already have it.
Eating just two Brazil nuts a day is effective in increasing selenium status and enhancing glutathione peroxidase activity. Glutathione peroxidase is the general name of an enzyme family with peroxidase activity...

Shirley C. Bingham: These Brazil nuts are a little different in two ways: taste and texture.
TASTE: Most Brazil nuts I’ve eaten have a taste that’s a little hard to describe, an “earthy” sort of taste, maybe slightly bitter, or metallic, or something. If that taste doesn’t appeal to you, you may like these Brazil nuts. A surprise was that they are practically skinless [i.e. naked], almost totally white, instead of some white among the patches of the dark skin. I assume this is the reason for the milder taste, the lack of that stronger earthy taste. Maybe the explanation for the taste difference is that the other Brazil nuts I’ve eaten are of a lesser quality than these Food to Live nuts.
TEXTURE: This is a little harder to describe. Brazil nuts are naturally dense; these nuts seem just a little less dense, easier to crunch, not quite as hard. They still have a good crunch, a nice bite, but I can eat more of these nuts faster (not a good thing!).
Bottom line: These nuts are not quite as hard, not as dense as other Brazil nuts I’ve eaten, and they have a milder flavor. I think many people would love that and happily give 5 stars. I miss the harder crunch and slightly bitter...
