frankebabyfrankebaby: This thing is the boss right here. I have 20 year old thinset up to 3/4" thick in some places. I noticed the bolts coming loose about 50sf into the job. I tighten them up every time I see one spin. I did 100sf in an hour with a Makita 13# 10a. I recommend letting it cool and regreasing every hour. This will chew a Harbor Freight demo hammer up so get the warranty for sure if thats what you grab! I picked this like-new Makita up for $200 on CL so look around locally before hitting up Harbor Freight. 13#er is all a homeowner needs. I busted that slab up in 5 minutes with a flat chisel and bull point with this bad boy too.

Edit: I just finished the job. Over 700# of thinset. The blade still looks new. I had a couple one hour sessions without a break and she held up fine. I bought a spare blade, and i'll be sending it back. I had a total of about 10 hours in the job, half of that was sweeping. I went over it a couple times. It's down to the bare slab. I had 3 quotes ranging from $2,600 to $900 which did not include cleanup. I can't believe I about just tiled over it because I thought it was too much work. It's not! The thicker the layer of thinset, the easier it was to get up....

Discerning_Buyer: I had an SDS MAX (6.1 ft-lbs) and an SDS Plus (2.2 ft-lbs) available to remove 800 square feet of mexican tile. I tried a variety of combinations of bits and tools to find what worked best. I found that this bit worked well for thinset removal, but took a little bit time than the 4" version for SDS Plus. I found that the smaller SDS plus actually did a better job of removing thinset than the larger 6" SDS Max bit. I believe this is because the SDS plus, although lower energy, has twice the frequency (5,800 bpm versus 2,900 bmp for the SDS max). The higher frequency seems to take the thinset off better. Using this combination, I was able to remove 800 square feet of tile and thinset in about 13 hours (approximately 60 square feet per hour). If your SDS Max is a higher frequency, than the 6" thinset removal bit may work better for you.

IJM Customs: Unfortunately some people expect tools to do all the work for them with minimal effort on their part and when it doesn't they blame the tool.
This scraper gets an extreme amount of abuse from the hammering and for some reason people complain when it tends to loosen bolts or shear the occasional one off.

This tool did an excellent job removing 30 year old thinset, tile was removed with a 24"X 4" chisel in the same demolition hammer. Was it Fast? Took 4 hrs to do 130 sq ft and it was like removing 1/4" of poured concrete. Had to tighten the bolts twice, not a big deal since it was good time to take a break. If you over tighten the bolts they tend to shear off/break much faster. Beware the head gets extremely hot and standard threadlock melts away, use a threadlock for high heat and be prepared to work for a few hours before needing to check looseness.

We did not use this tool to remove the large tile but it had no problems with removing penny round from the bathroom floor and shower.

Adam: Worked like a champ on 1400 sq ft of tough tile floor. I used it primarily to remove a thick layer of thin-set after the tile had been removed. It did work to remove the tile, just not as effectively as a chisel blade. After removing the tile with a different blade, this thing worked great at scrapping away at the remaining layer of thin-set mortar. The long length made it so I didn't have to be on my hands and knees all day. It came with nylon locking nuts that did come loose several times through out the project requiring regular tightening. Otherwise it worked great. As an aside, I did try this blade at removing glued-down hardwood floors. It did not work for that. After I pulled the hardwood it did work to scrape up the remaining glue. Would buy again!

JulietJuliet: The tool is great and permits effective and efficient thinset removal.

Like others have said the fasteners provided with the tool are the weak link.

The hardened M10-1.5 cap bolts arrive pre-treated w/ blue thread locker. They also use / include non-hardened nylock nuts. A second set of these fasteners are included.

The problem stems from the fact that the tool gets hot during usage. Heat is used to soften / release the blue thread locker, like is used on the tool bolts. The bolts get too hot to touch during usage, making that liquid thread locker ineffective. The nylock nut is specified for 220°F maximum temperature. The fastener gets waaay hotter than that temperature during usage. The melted nylon is visible on the bolt threads.

My solution was to use hardened distorted thread lock nuts. These fasteners are effective at temperatures up to 1,400°F. These fasteners were a good solution to the loosening problem. (The attached image for mine also have hardened jam nuts on longer hardened bolts, from an earlier attempt to resolve the loosening problem.

Edit: Unused tool was stored in non-climate controlled room and entire surface became covered...
