5-Gallon Pail of Ready Seal 512 Natural Cedar Exterior Stain and Sealer

beckabecka: new cedar fence installed June 6, it’s now late sept/early october. Certain areas of the wood is already weathering grey (PNW area) but majority still looks new.

Stain is very watery but is oil based. Buckets easy to pour. Buckets were not damaged or leaking but boxes were a little beat up, not much though. Very easy application. I suggest rolling it on rather than spraying. 120 linear feet, 6 feet tall fence was able to do with a 5 gallon bucket.

Russell L.OwensRussell L.Owens: I stained my fence with this product. The fence had been up for a year so and it was ready to soak in the stain. Like the company says , “goof proof”. I really used just one coat applying with a roller trying to apply somewhat heavy coats. I used a large brush to get on top of and between the boards. This seems to have been enough. Went back and re covered some places that didn’t seem as dark as other spots. The touch ups blended right in. I used two 5 gallon containers for my fence. Looks great and glad I did myself.

Lyle: The sealer is a little thin so application is quite easy. Although the Light Oak is the lightest colour stain in this series it still darkens the wood.

Hiker_SteveHiker_Steve: Used on aged cedar and the stain was easy to apply and soaked right into the wood. Repells water really well. Stayed wet for 2 days in the heat, while it continued to soak in.

RON ROMANIUK: I sprayed it on my fence with a hand held pump garden sprayer and the product blended into itself perfectly
no runs all evenly coated ... really nice stuff to work with . The natural cedar is a great finish on new cedar .

Tripped onto Ready Seal on Amazon after reading dozens, hundreds of reviews of so many different products. Skip the 5-Star-- just read the 1-Star Reviews. Loads of research over these 3-years, but nothing popped. Until Ready Seal came on the horizon. Minimal 1-Stars. Started watching every video I could find on RS. YouTube, Amazon, Ready Seal's proprietary videos. Reading data sheets on RS's website. Tons more research. Months pass.

Convinced. Buy two 5-gal. totes of Natural Cedar. I wanted the "most orange" color RS offered. I call this "Backwards Prep." Order the supply before I'm ready to do the work. This gives me the incentive to "go all in. Not back out. Forge ahead. Wait for the monsoons to stop. Research a little more. Learn how to turn this amateur gig into professional. Techniques. Kel: Great stain that finishes beautifully and penetrates the wood extremely well. Incredible easy application that lives up to the reputation. Can be a messy spray and it will balance out nicely.

The downsides to this stain are:
a. it takes nearly double the amount of some professional stains, likely due to the penetration.
b. because of the penetration it will gray out a bit sooner in full UV than some other pro stains

The most recent project for 250ft of fence (6ft high), both sides two coats, i used close to 25gallons. That's roughly 60sqft/gal. This was new fence so it sucked up more, but take that into consideration.

The benefits are you don't need to strip this for reapplication. Just clean/bleach the wood and reapply. It really is the easiest thing for a homeowner. I'll never go back to thick stains or paint.

VictorVictor: We used this on an eleven year old deck, treated but unfinished boards. They had held up well through western prairie summer/winter conditions, but were starting to show their age.
This is a penetrating oil. Easy to use, a 5” brush did best and neatest coverage on the 12’ x 16’ surface.
Still about 1/3rd of pail left.
Prep was just a light fast surface sanding.
Other decks in past years had various paints and stains, but they all eventually peel and crack and cause more work. This oil soaks right into the board grain.
Excellent product. We will continue to use it.
The applied colour is darker than the ordering sample, but that more likely is due to the aged boards.

John SJohn S: The following review is my experience refinishing my fence with Ready Seal stain/sealer. 4 years ago I rebuilt my privacy fence using cedar pickets this time around instead of the pressure treated pine used previously. Wanting to let the wood weather/dry out/shrink before I stained it, somehow 4 years went by. The south (full sun) facing portion of the fence had turned dark gray (almost black when wet) while the north facing side was a nice medium gray but had a little mildew in places. Letting it go so long required a major power washing. Now that the fence was looking almost new again It was time to put some protection on it. Having previously coated the fence (before rebuild) with a water based stain product I decided this time around I wanted an oil based stain that actually "absorbed/penetrated" into the wood. The water based stain (from that orange big box store) weathered like paint, meaning it peeled and flaked after a number of years on the full sun side of the fence. After much research I settled on Ready Seal. FilomenaFilomena: This product is amazing. I highly recommend the product. I initially did not know what to expect with the product. Heck putting up fence boards was suddenly a requirement so I had a huge learning curve. First the wood and then the stain. Regular fence boards? Cedar fence boards? Tongue and groove fence boards? (What, that’s a thing for fences?!). Then the spacing and allowance for expansion and shrinkages. What colour stain? Oil base? Water base? So much information and my head spun a bit. Once I selected the wood things just fell in place. And the wood specialists recommended the oil stain for its better protection so I came to Amazon to search for stains and this one came up. It was perfect and just what I needed both in colour and quantity as I needed a lot as I was staining 185 fence boards. From the first to the last board the stain was perfect. The container is great and I really liked the opening which was so easy to open and pour out the quantities I need. The stain goes on very nicely and coats well. I don’t know it’s longevity yet but so far the product is amazing.
