Eric Dingler: I got this for 3 of my kids to use in their homeschooling. It’s definitely not an English Language book, but I gets my kids wanting to write! And from there we can talk about grammar, spelling, and English. I really like how they get to read the story and take it from there. Also, you can use this book for such a long time (just have the kid write on a different piece of paper) because they can change they way they see the story playing out. So don’t be afraid to repeat a story! If you kid needs a little more fun in their writing, definitely get this book!

JuleNY: I was, ideally, looking for something where they could write into the book after the prompt like a journal -- at least for a first draft. The prompts are good. I can see a teacher using this to read to a class and then the kids doing the exercise. If you are a parent looking to encourage continued writing over the summer or similar... They will need a journal or notebook to go along with this. Such an easy fix by the publisher. For the parents... just know what to expect.

Detroit sports fan 1: Wow, bought this cuz my 10 yr. old really didn't like writing. I gave this to him, and he wants to do it everyday and loves it. I'm amazed, cuz it's just a simple black and white written stories, but it really got the creative juices flowing, I've already bought more scholastic writing books. I think even past 6th grade could use, depends on kid. We homeschool sonlight btw, I add books like these that seem to motivate my son.

Caryn: I am teaching a creative writing class for 2-6 grade students, and my kids and I LOVE this book! In fact, we use it as our opener for every session. (We only meet once a week, so it doesn't get old. I'm not sure *any* single writing prompt book would work for a daily approach.) We've done it in a variety of ways -- kids writing their own conclusions to the stories, working in pairs or threes (oral or written), and orally with the whole group. Either way it works well. The kids have loved collecting their samples in their folders, and are very proud of what they've come up with. Many choose to keep going during our free-writing time as well.

I have also used this with my five-year-old and her friends, and they adore it as well. It makes a wonderful play date activity. It's a great way to enhance younger children's creativity, introduce story structure, etc.
