Jackie: My daughter loves to learn. She enjoys being able to practice school at home with this and I love that it is giving her more confidence.

Nicole: I am a teacher homeschooling my 9 year old son with autism during the pandemic. This book requires writing skills to answer the questions. Most reading comprehension books for 2nd grade have a variety of activities in response to the reading such as multiple choice and fill in the blanks so that you can assess the child’s comprehension of the reading independent of their ability to write. This book mostly asks questions that require sentence answers. If your child cannot write sentences yet, they are not ready for this book unless you want to verbally ask the questions. I kept the book and will save it for next year. I use the 1st grade version of this book with my son right now. I have many other 2nd grade reading comprehension books my son and I like better than this one.

Blagojce A.: Has approximately 75 one-page stories. Each story has one page of 7-8 questions. Often, there is not quite enough room to write out the full answer on the line provided, but it's not overly annoying. The questions themselves focus on reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. For example, a passage on bridges was followed by a question to identify the types of bridges discussed. Another question asked how two specific bridges discussed in the text were different. It also will ask what the reader thinks will happen next in fictional passages and whether statements are fact or opinion. Some questions ask the reader to identify what happened first, next, and last in the story. The words used in the texts themselves are appropriate for a reader at or near the 2nd grade level. They may need help with a few words, but they can read most words without difficulty. My daughter is an average reader and we bought the book for her to work in during the summer between 1st and 2nd grade. It takes her 10-20 minutes to compete each passage. A child with better reading comprehension skills would likely finish it more quickly.

Vickie Johnson: Just wanted to point out something about this book. There are places along the way that asks your child to answer questions to topics that aren't spoken of prior to the question. Example: My daughter read a story and went to answer all of the questions for the story and out of the blue it asks her to write an example of some of the dialogue in the story. She asked me about it and I figured I could look back on the page to see if it gave her examples of what dialogue meant, so I could go over it with her, but I never found it, so when I come to a situation like this, I just have to do a little more research to give her examples. We have started writing down these words into a list and I have her look up the definition and then we have a test on all of these words and what they mean. That is the only way that I know to remedy the problem. Most people know that dialogue is the sentences in quotes, but for a second grader, it would be nice if they provided words with definitions. Maybe I'm picky, but I like to make sure my kids have good descriptions of things before they have to answer questions that have never been presented to them before.
