Mungo__Park: 101 vignettes about animal sightings and experiences from visitors to South Africa's famed Kruger NP. I imagine certainly more enjoyable for those who have actually been there. The strong emphasis throughout of describing in minute details near which road or campsite or fallen tree the incidents occurred quickly becomes tedious. Above all, what I got from reading this is that Kruger NP is full of ignorant tourists by the carload, traffic jams at animal sightings, etc etc. Give me a nice private game reserve with a truly wild feel anytime, but I think I can cross Kruger off my list of places to see before I die.

Anna: This book is a collection of stories about the Kruger National Park in South Africa. Each story is told by the people who experienced the events first hand – some of them are hilarious, some are barely believable and some will make you cringe in fear, but all of them capture the essence of South Africa’s most famous national park – it’s beauty, wildness and exceptional game viewing. Some of the stories are also accompanied by photographs, which further add to the enjoyment.
The stories in the book are also a reminder that despite the nearly 2 million visitors to Kruger every year, it is at its heart filled with wild animals who are beautiful and astounding but ultimately unpredictable.
I loved this collection of stories, it made me laugh (almost hysterically) at times, it also made me gasp in horror – in particular the picture of the python curled up over the engine of a small car… I think I also learnt a few things, the one that comes to mind is that bats like to live in thatch and snakes like to hunt bats, and the last thing you want to run into in an enclosed space is a Mozambican spitting cobra…
I would recommend this book for anyone planning...

Henthorne4: In preparing to go to a South Africa I selected this book as Kruger was our main destination. The stories were so interesting and often times hilarious - especially being from everyday visitors to the park. One can learn the typical animal sighting and what's unusual in the park. I was so excited on our first day in the park to see the remains of a zebra that a leopard had pulled into the tree to eat something I knew nothing about until reading these tales. Learning the mistakes that led to mishaps I felt "better prepared" to not make the same mistakes. On my actual trip when driving into our remote lodge we encountered our first elephant and when he began shaking his head and starting to charge I knew we were in a dangerous situation and told my husband to get out of the way as quick as possible. I was hoping to not see any of the spitting Cobras and can say I saw a juvenile black mamba from the safety of our vehicle. The tales of encounters with the deadliest snake in South Africa were much more colorful so I was delighted to see one safely! If you are staying in a rest camp there are many tales to prepare you - we didn't have time to stay at a rest camp but would have loved to....

Carl Whisner: A fun and interesting read, especially because I am currently living for six months about half an hour from the Punta Maria gate for northern Kruger Park. We have visited the park three times while in SA and the book adds highlights to any Kruger visit. The stories are real, true, and typical of Kruger. The book is easy to read and great for short bursts as each story is brief and stands alone. 101of them is super!
I liked that the author sectioned the stories geographically because the park is huge and I was able to read about the separate areas I went to prior to going.. Obviously, a book this specific in topic will not perhaps appeal to everyone. However, I recommend it to anyone who likes animals and their interactions with humans. Makes a great bathroom reader. The book is compiled from actual people's personal experiences in their own words so is a bit unusual to its credit.
