Outdoorman777Outdoorman777: I already own a pair of Nikon Monarch 7s in 8x30 (really nice), but I wanted something with more magnification. I have woods in the back of my house, and want to be able to use binocs for deer about 60 yds away, in addition to bird watching. 8x will work, but for my purpose, more magnification is better as I want to see deer racks in as much detail as possible. I couldn't decide between 10x or 12x. I ordered a pair of Nikon M5s in 12x42, and these Zeiss Terra ED binocs in 10x32 for a direct comparison.
The Nikon 12x42s were nice, but…compared to the Zeiss, they were harder to focus sharply, had to constantly be re-focused, were more difficult to hold steady, and the image they presented was not quite as sharp and detailed as that provided by the Zeiss. My choice was clear - the Nikons went back.
The Terra EDs are quick and easy to focus, offering a very sharp, crisp image. They are relatively compact and light, at only 18 ounces, which is very important to me given my prior experience with heavy binoculars.
