Comments

Mariya Ivanova: The book is not boring to read, and there are some funny moments, but the majority of the time I was thinking "what on earth did I just read?!". It was completely ridiculous and, in some instances, very dark

Amazing McHotness: The pages of the book are made of paper. Sometimes I read this on my Kindle app, which is on my phone.

Brian T. Brophey: funny, love Jack Handey; this one reminded me of Bored of the Rings by the Harvard Lampoon

James Auton: I was reading the chapter on "The best Fly Fisherman" in a packed out waiting room at my local hospital, there must have been 30 or more people in the room. Half way through the first page I started to make a noise that could only be described as "guffawing" at the hilariousness of what I was reading. I had to put my Kindle away to try and contain myself but was still unable to prevent random snorting as I tried not to laugh out loud whenever my mind returned to the book. The waiting room seemed to become very hot and unfriendly as everyone else became focused on the loon in the corner laughing at nothing.

Great book, easy to drop in and out of and guaranteed to make you laugh out loud on every page.

Thanks Jack ;)

Mike Smith: Jack Handey has by now completely proven that his humor is not some dated 1990s relic--his Deep Thoughts and Fuzzy Memories are every bit as funny to read today as they were when they were first written. I've collected all of his books, read and re-read them, and quite frankly I think he is among the funniest and most timeless satirists America has ever had. His command of the startlingly random and the absurdly insightful is unparalleled, and having his many NEW YORKER and OUTSIDE pieces collected here with much of his other hilarious miscellany makes this book a must-have for anyone unashamed of having permanent laugh lines on his or her face.

This is not, it should be noted, a collection of merely "clever" or "humorous" writing that will evoke little more than knowing nods, wistful smiles, or the occasional chuckle. This book is HILARIOUS--the sort of thing that might destroy a relationship if read while sitting across from a significant other with your mouth full of milk, the sort of thing that will incite (welcome or unwelcome) public interactions with fellow bus passengers wondering what the hell is so funny, the sort of the thing that might make you laugh so hard...

Mark Eremite: Growing up, I was always told by friends and ne'er-do-wells that "Jack Handey" was a pseudonym for the entire cast of SNL. No one person, I was told, could come up with those hilarious bon mots known as  Deep Thoughts . Apparantly, this is a lie that Handey himself perpetrated, so as to better avoid his creditors.

If you read this book from the first page to the last, as I have since been taught to do, you will no doubt realize that what is at work is the twisted mind of one absurd individual. Ever since my senior thesis (entitled "Modern Meaning is Found in Absurdity," and based almost entirely on Monty Python sketches), I have found this style of humor to be the most endearing and relevant, at least to the Whack-A-Mole version of life that I "live."

The short, stabbing silliness of  Deep Thoughts , however, is (mostly) replaced by a multitude of off-beat and stubbornly trivial essays. I'd list my favorites, but that would be a long list, one that would be boring to everyone, even myself, since typing has grown wearisome ever since I lost my fingernail clippers. Jack Handey himself might enjoy reading such a list, but he seems far too self-involved to care...
