TheDailyConsumer: Does exactly what its supposed to do, quiet the sound of a loud fan. Trust me, if you use fans for airflow, you know how loud they are, and you need one of these. Definitely makes a huge difference. Great buy!

@astrophoto_canada: Although the duct fan noise is still present, the noise was suppressed significantly.
It’s not as quiet as my homemade suppressor on a 6” duct fan but looks much more professional! I’d recommend it for the money.

Digitalbitch: Doesn’t really reduce noise (lowered 1db) but now I have somewhere to put more stickers :)

Jason Hearle: Worked exactly as I'd hoped. Maybe even better.
Noise from the fan I'm using is at least 50% reduced at the outlet. Seems to really knock down higher pitched sounds.
Like night and day compared to before.

Jeffrey: I put it on my inline fan and the noisy reduction isn’t noticeable.

tammy haryett: Works well enough but doesn't quiet the motor itself.

John Koehler: I had hoped for a bit more attenuation but this is still a great improvement over running a wide open fan. That said I have adjusted expectations and will almost certainly purchase another in the future.
I now have fans and mufflers in both 4 and 6 inch and through my experience I learned a few things about noise mitigation:
a: The mechanical noise of the fan is transmitted through the muffler body and I highly recommend decoupling muffler from fan using a flexible hose (not semi rigid) and suspending both separately with nylon webbing or similar material.
b: Using a 6" fan at half speed with or without a muffler is much quieter than a 4" fan with muffler at a higher speed
c: Keeping the fan perfectly horizontal greatly minimizes mechanical noise (especially cheap fans)
d: High quality "Premium" fans are far quieter than budget fans

FaithFaith: After hooking this up to a carbon filter and motor, this is the best air purifier I've ever use. It removes the most harsh chemicals, i.e. PAINT THINNER and acrylic paint, within about 30 minutes.
We have an artist who lives in the house and created an art studio in a small 11x11 bedroom, and previously the smell was terrible. With this thing running, it completely eliminates all chemical smells, and rapidly.
Originally, I connected it to this motor: (Black motor in the photo)

However, it was too inefficient, and produced a lot of heat. And when the fan was turned down, it made a loud hum.
So then, I upgraded to THIS motor: (Motor is inside the Duct Silencer)

Which is the HyperStealth fan with a built in silencer. Its much, MUCH taller now, but so quiet and energy efficient. No noticeable heat output from the fan, and it can be turned down to low speed and is extremely silent. At low, you literally cannot hear it.
To make it even quieter than...

Elliander Eldridge: I purchased this to help quiet the airflow from a Bitcoin miner. The box I built around the machine with sound insulation was barely effective until I attached one of these to each end. It definitely, and significantly, reduced the sound. There wasn't a problem with restricted airflow either. However, it needs to be right up against the fan to be effective. When I ran a duct from the fan to it the effectiveness was seriously diminished. It's clearly most effective right up against it, but there's still a problem of sound leaking from the 4 inch portion that connects to the fan, so I'll likely need to wrap that in additional sound insulation foam.
As a test, I wrapped this in rigid sound reflecting material expecting it to help even more due to the fact that this appears to rely on sound absorbing foam, with that was only marginally effective in further reducing sound so the stainless steel metal casing likely has sound reflecting properties of it's own. When I wrap it in additional foam insulation I'll see if it has any benefits to add more and if so will edit accordingly.
A major negative is that it doesn't really have anything to attach anything to for fixing it...

steveb: I have a fan that is removing humidity from my basement. This muffler keeps the fan noise down to a minimum.
