Big Ed: I purchases two Sportsman II knives a couple of months apart. And they were quite different. The first knife was "medium" in size with shiny red "Celladon" plastic scales. The second knife was "compact" with dull red nylon scales. "Compact" is notably smaller than "medium," but may actually make the knife a better every-day carry. Conversely, I wonder whether the can opener and corkscrew -- both of which are scaled down -- are too small to be usable. In each purchase, I selected the cheapest knife with the tools I wanted. So, maybe the first knife was a mistake on Amazon's part, shipping me a larger, shiny knife for a lower price. The catch is, the web site doesn't really give you much warning of the size difference. I had to really dig after the second one arrived to find the word "compact." The photo did show a matte finish, but I didn't notice. Now, I have to decide whether it is worth paying 23% more for a shiny, larger knife. Oh, dear.

BJ Montana: And the price was reasonable. I carry it with me all the time to take care of those frustrating moments (especially when on the road) when you need a tool and don't have access to your kitchen or garage.

Hollywood: One of the cheapest two layers you can get and the "cheaper looking shells" as some call them hold up better against scratches and dings whilest giving more of a textured grip. Perfectly fits in my pocket without being noticeable.

Michael Dumoulin: The knife is exactly like when everyone had to have one.(35 years ago for me). Arrived in a tiny box, and well protected. I said Exactly, but I should mention that the red parts used to be super smooth polished(if I'm remembering correctly), but now it is a rougher, sandpaper like finish. I'm surmising that it is for a better grip. This blade is RAZER SHARP! PERFECT!

Ely: Excellent knife! Didn't notice the finish is matte.. Not the usual smooth polish type. Plus for this! :)

Bayside Father:
I have been a Swiss Army Knife fan for just about as long as I can remember. I've been carrying a Classic since forever, and have several other Swiss Army Knives for other purposes as well. The Sportsman fills a niche somewhere between the Waiter (blade, all-in-one can opener/cap lifter/wire stripper, and corkscrew) and the Fieldmaster (same as the Huntsman, but with a Phillips head screwdriver instead of a corkscrew).
The Sportsman is light, small enough to fit into an Altoids tin, and slim enough for a pants pocket, but has a big enough blade to do some useful cutting in a pinch. It has a variety of tools that will come in hand in a myriad of places. The best feature for me, though, is the nail file. The *pointed* nail file (i.e., nail file with nail cleaner), is the tool I use the most on my Classic—often several times a day. It's perfect as a mini-pry bar, for scraping, pushing, getting at something where fingers can't reach, and a million other purposes—including filing fingernails! I miss it on my bigger knives, and now, since I have a Sportsman, I can use this on excursions that are unlikely to need all the possibilities of a larger...

Peter B: I have seen a few postings and reviews by people who seem a little disappointed with the textured scales. Understandably the shiny, smooth, red scales have been around for a long time and are fully recognized as Swiss Army knives. I used to think that but I've been frustrated with the scratching on the handles. In my opinion the textured scales eliminate the desire to keep the scales scratch free and are a perfect choice for these smaller models. I do wish the shield was actually the inlaid metal instead of hot stamped but even the metal falls out eventually. The size of this knife is perfect for every day carry in jeans pockets or slacks. I was trying to decide between the sportsman and the tourist because of the size and they have only what you need. The only difference between them is the tourist has a small blade and large blade where the sportsman has a large blade and nail file with nail cleaner. I found this sportsman II with the texturing so I chose this model. I don't need two blades and the nail file and cleaner are more handy than just a small blade. Yes, this is the Victorinox I have been looking for! I wish I had bought one sooner!! Of course, more...

owlclaw: I've had this Sportsman II blade for a couple of years now as my EDC cutting tool and it's held up well. I do keep it in either a dedicated leather sleeve, or a caddy I made along with a pen and flashlight. All of the high quality tools work well, and I've made it more useful for my needs with a couple of modifications. I narrowed the tip on the reamer slightly so it can push in watch band pins for easy size adjustments. I added a SAK mini screwdriver to the corkscrew for fixing eyeglasses, and I replaced the toothpick with a Firefly ferro rod so I have a means of emergency fire starting if necessary. For woodland use, I have a Victorinox Rangergrip 79, but the Sportsman II as equipped serves me well in the urban jungle.
