alycia medina: Although I somewhat have a background due to my degree in radiation health physics, I truly loved this book. This book is informative, has amazing flow, and truly connects puzzle pieces together. Had me hooked from the very beginning and I simply couldn’t put it down!!!

Riley Andren: One of my favorite science books. The author uses stories, analogies and hyperbole to make sure you really understand radiation. The author is one of those “able to explain it to a six year old types” to paraphrase Einstein. It’s a very easy read yet at the same time I feel I very much understand the material and can easily recall it months after reading. Would definitely recommend this book.

I found this a really interesting read.
Would recommend to anyone interested in science history. It’s also not too technical in its wording.

Domingo Lopez Diaz: This book offers a huge amount of information, not accesible through text books, about what radiation means and its importance for modern society. It explains the origins of radiation, gives a tour along the experts in the field whose work unravelled the misteries of radioactivity, and shows how radiactivity has become part of our lives. Specially interesting are the episodes about the first nuclear tests and how the effects of radioactivity on health was uncovered based on dramatic events. I strongly recomend the reading of this more than interesting book.

Justin: This book is great. I’m a nuclear engineering major and there was a lot of history I was able to get out of and learn from this book. In terms of highly technical stuff from this book, there really is none. You don’t need any background knowledge on the subject either to understand. If you just want a general idea of what radiation is, where is came from and how we got to this point. I think this book is for you.

Robert Fargher:
This is a tremendous book. It is very well written and an enjoyable read. This is the story of ionising radiation, commonly called radioactivity (not all ionising radiation comes from radioactivity, eg. medical X-rays).. The author is a molecular radiation biologist who is interested in risk assessment of environmentally-induced human cancer, from both chemicals and radiation. As such, he is eminently qualified to write this book; it's intended audience is the well-known intelligent layman.
In a nutshell, the book is organised around two major topics: the history and physics of radioactivity and the health physics of ionising radiation. It is the latter topic which shines most brightly here, in that the real risks of radiation are clearly explained. The popular perception of radioactivity can border on uninformed hysteria. This book is an excellent tool to dispel such hysteria.
And I love that the cover is printed with phosphorescent ink and does glow.

J. Oliver: A good summary with a lot of technical detail. Should be a good read for the technically minded.

Strange Glow is a good read for the average person. If you are PhD radiochemist you might be frustrated by the lack of equations, functions, and charts. If you are decent at understanding the basics (or at least willing to reread the paragraphs that are a bit technical), you will begin to understand radiation a bit more.
What Jorgensen does is unravel the mysteries around radiation for eh average person. I took the required one year of chemistry and physics in high school and college, so do not live in his world. But his approach of relating the advances made, especially in last century or so are more a historical or detective novel – personalities, rivalries, financial gains, etc. Each seems to build off the other in a way that I appreciated understanding (maybe my high school chemistry teacher was right after all … gentlemen, you have to keep up, as tomorrow’s lessons will build off today!).
Strange Glow allowed me access to the technical discussions we read about in the news. I wish more scientists would speak to me as a lay person, in analogies or a language that I can understand. That is one of the strengths of Jorgenson’s work. ...

Ellie: The book is well written and fairly easy to understand by a person not involved in the radiation industry.
