Amazon Customer: I've never considered the geographical aspects influencing culture, economics, and politics, so it is interesting and enlightening for me. The narratives of fighting about borders and kingdoms is depressing--but our species will probably never stop warring over land, water, and other natural resources.

JCB: Excellent book explaining in few pages history, geography and the geopolitical impact of the nation in review as well as bordering countries.
Well done and easy to follow.

Charlie: Tim Marshall does an excellent job providing an overview of how geography shapes politics and societies. He impressively covers the entire globe, striking a perfect balance between providing enough details and maps for the lay reader to understand while not getting bogged down in tedium. Prisoners of Geography helps explain many of the trends that exist today and provides important context behind relationships that are mischaracterized or oversimplified in the nightly talking points.

While I highly recommend this book based on its content and style, it’s critical to not overstate the importance of geography at the expense of the true driver of all history- ideas. Bad ideas will lead to misery regardless of geography and good, or life-supporting, ideas will lead to flourishing. Reason, liberty, and individualism will easily triumph over any geographical difficulties. Other humans holding opposing ideas are the only real threats, which unfortunately are ubiquitous and spreading.

Very informative and entertaining. 5 stars.

Maria Ines Carias: The book Prisoners of Geography: Ten Maps That Explain Everything About the World (Politics of Place Book 1) by journalist Tim Marshall explores the impact that geography has on international relations. Marshall uses ten maps of key regions of the world to explain how the physical aspects of a country, such as its location, its climate, its natural resources, and its borders, can influence its foreign policy.

The book begins with a discussion of the importance of geography in politics. Marshall argues that the leaders of countries are not completely free to make their own decisions, since their options are limited by geographical conditions. For example, Russia needs to have a navy in order to project its power to the world, but its ports are frozen for six months of the year, limiting its ability to operate at sea.

Marshall then examines ten key regions of the world, using maps to illustrate his points. In the chapter on Russia, for example, Marshall explains how Russia's location between Europe and Asia, its extreme climate, and its long borders have made it vulnerable to foreign invasions. In the chapter on China, Marshall explains how geography has helped China...

Odurah: Good read, but strong bias toward an anglo-saxon vision of geopolitics
