Meine Empfehlung.

Mary Owens: I found this book after reading an article about being our own bartenders during the pandemic shelter-at-home directives, by Devra First, the food writer in the Boston Globe. I'm so glad I bought it -- it's well-written, the recipes look great and the photography is beautiful. I'm so impressed that I'm going to order gift copies for my sisters. I'm a cocktail novice -- but Zoom happy hours have sparked my interest. I will use this book as a road map to thoughtfully build up my home bar supplies.

NorCal Reader: This is a straightforward, no-nonsense guide to a selection of classic cocktails with just enough history & antedotes for a quick, enjoyable read. I especially like the author's philosophy that a good cocktail made at home should not be too complicated to execute: leave the complicated drinks to the professionals! It is convincing enough to get me to re-try drinks I dismissed in my youth. And if an old dog can learn a new trick or two, how bad can that be? Enjoy.

Jonathan & MeredithJonathan & Meredith: This book is really neat, with it’s MCM cover and super beautiful photographs inside. I got it as a display book on a front-facing bookshelf in our mostly-MCM decorated bedroom (ignore my still-wrapped picture frame. We are waiting for our wedding photos to come through.) The recipes are about what you would expect, standard three-ingredient drinks with simple to follow instructions. I keep it on the shelves right next to our bar cart, making the period theme very obvious.
I really do like the photographs inside. They are mostly glass foregrounds with dark backgrounds, but there is variation, especially in the Sours section. Overall this is a nice bar book and would also make an excellent gift.

Marc Douglas Glenn: I am not a huge drinker, but I do enjoy making a cocktail for my wife and I every so often, and for guests when we have small dinners or larger parties. I have looked for the last few years for a cocktail book that tackles the classics, but which also includes some new twists and which has enough content to pretty much satisfy any entertaining need – all without being overwhelming. Most cocktail books I have found end up being either (a) way, way too dense, too large and overly hard to use (and with most of the cocktails being ones you would never use), or (b) way, way too flighty and trendy … with almost all of the cocktails being too trendy (and unheard of) to use. This book hit the excellence trifecta – it not only tackles the classics, it provides a rich, and entertaining history of those drinks (which you don’t have to read to make the cocktail … but which you will want to), it includes some great new modern (but recognizable) twists, and there are just the right amount of drink recipes – enough to entertain pretty much any party guest, without it becoming too dense to use. Plus the pictures are phenomenal. I cannot encourage you enough to buy this book.

emperkins: This book is exactly what I was looking for. I'm comfortable in the kitchen, but one "blind spot" in my food knowledge is cocktails. I didn't know where to start making basic drinks. A bartender recommended the Death & Co book, but it looked like it was way over my head. I came across this book, and I'm glad I bought it. The recipes are good and reliable. The ingredient lists aren't daunting. The sign of a good recipe book is that you find yourself coming back to it over and over again. (I've got a few that are collecting dust, as I type this.) I come back to this book over and over again. I'm not good at remembering drink ratios, so it's a helpful written guide to mix together old favorites or try something new.
