B. J. Wassmer: This book corrects the lies that have been told about Pope Plus XII and his efforts during WWII. It is an unbiased telling of his goal of locating the bones of the first pope while secretly saving the lives of thousands of Jews during the holocaust in Europe. It is a wonderful tribute to those who participated in both projects.

Roy Brown: This book tells the story of the Apostle Peter the Catholic Church's first Pope. The story begins with where Peter was when he was martyred. Our story begins with a very wealthy benefactor named George Strake, an American citizen who is approached by Pope Pious XII before the start of World War II. Strake made is wealth as an oil wildcatter.
The book alternates between the time of Peter's death and the birth of the early church and the early Christians of the Roman Empire during the time of Nero. The reign of Nero was truly barbaric. This is where history begins to confound the modern world. The tomb of Peter according to the book was hidden in plain sight as the early Christians used writings and symbols to confound the Roman tormentors. It was an eye-opener for me as I was given a lesson in the ancient history of Christianity; and while I knew that the Emporer Constantine decreed Christianity legit in the empire, he didn't do it out of compassion, but rather because of his mother's devotion to the religion.
The archeological aspect of the book is no less fascinating with church appointed excavators in charge of the search for Peter's tomb. I will not spoil it, but let's...

hamptoncherry: I recommend reading this book after the brilliant book by John Evangelist Walsh The Bones of St. Peter. Read together they really draw a compelling picture of the research and archaeology that made discovery of the bones of the apostle possible. The account written by Walsh is fascinating and describes the dig, it's findings and tests performed for authentication in minute detail. The book by John O'Neil is written some twenty years later and pics up where the first book stops, especially the lamentable persecution and ridiculing of the brilliant Margherita Guarducci, who is a real hero of the story. She has my huge respect. The FIsherman's Tomb is very good if you want to learn about characters and their relationships, The Bones of St.Peter is better and more accurate representation of the actual work that led to probably the biggest archaeological discovery of the 20th century. Not to be missed.

Mrs. Susan E. Reid: Kept my interest from beginning to end. A true story about people who should have been included in my education but were not. For anyone like myself, who recognizes that science more often than not, backs up scripture, this book is a must.
