Amazon Customer: I am reading the book and it is interesting. I viewed Normandy from the Allied side but not the German side in this much detail. A job well done and worth the time for anyone who is intrigued by the Normandy saga.

sabonis07: I had never really thought of the German perspective of d-day before. I did enjoy hearing of what they saw and went through that day and how it was terrible on both sides. You can tell in some of the interviews that the soldiers still believed in why they fought and that was interesting. I would recommend,8/10.

Kindle Customer: Two sides to every story? This was so interesting. The germans thought the american/brit/russian war machine was out to take away Europe's sovereigny. They blamed the war in europe on American Bankers/Financial giants, British Masons, Russian Communism. They thought "The big Three" were out to make a one world government. They thought France was a cush ride to be stationed at(before D-day). They thought the entire war was only on the Russian front, and for a while in N. Africa for oil deposits (for the Axis war machine). They thought THEY were defending a united Europe from Commie aggression.
The entire book is filled with detailed accounts of personal level encounters. I see what it may have been like for these guys fighting a whirlwind of firepower on D-day.

Glen Hopkinson: We get to know these soldiers as human beings, their ideologies, beliefs, mostly fed by Nazi and German propaganda and in so many cases ignorance of the world situation. When they are finally faced on the morning of June 6th with the awesome forces massed against them, the wall of steel on the water and the armies coming for them, they were almost dumbfounded. I was surprised that after so much death and destruction they (the German army) had blasted on so many millions lover the past 6 years that they could hardly fathom that their enemies wanted to kill them. It is a series of stories that would benefit anyone and show them the randomness and lack of value of human life in desperate war.

David M.David M.: Most of the ‘landsers’ impressed me as honest and occasionally conflicted about their actions, just like most GI’s. The exception was the luftwaffe pilot who was arrogant and had too little insight and too many excuses.
The idea that the Germans in the axis actually considered themselves as protective partners in a United Europe was new to me. It would be interesting to know how much the feeling was reciprocated by Italy, France and Spain. Not much I think. One could argue they were fighting to save a classical European civilization but it would be untenable.
Nevertheless the book was an interesting and novel insight to the Wehrmacht ‘pbi’ point of view. The photo is intended to confirm I’ve tried to understand the conflicts involved.

MFF Jumpmaster: As a career soldier, I enjoyed the chance to read and gain an appreciation for the Allied operations as seen and experienced by the enemy. I've spent most of my life preparing for war by studying the tactics of the past, and then applying them as appropriate during my wars.

As one who was stationed in Germany during the Cold War, it was interesting to read frank and honest rendition of these soldiers' experiences. I met many Wehrmacht veterans during my five years in Germany. As old soldiers, there was little rancor or resentment left. They simply related their war stories to another soldier, as veterans often do. Those stories closely matched the events related in this book.

In my own time, I have shared experiences with Soviet veterans of Afghanistan. Our individual memories and experiences - their war and mine - were remarkably similar.

I encourage any student of military history to read this book. It is more than an expansion of better known Allied operations. It is the very definition of the price of military success as paid by those on the losing side. Even a righteous war is filled with unimaginable horror.

Thomas Schumacher: Considering the time (1950’s) when these second interviews were collected, and the earlier contact of the original author and the German Veterans, I find the content totally helpful at understanding just how I’ll prepared the Germans were. I suspect there are people who might find the fact that the Germans were rather depleted and unstaffed with former WW1 veterans, and those wounded and disfigured by the Eastern Front an affront to the horrors experienced at the Western Wall. And the fact that many Russian POWs switch sides to defend the WesternnWall. Even Rommel wondered what skin they really had in such a fight, yet their capture appears to have led to their deaths in Russia. However, clearly the war for Germany was lost on the Eastern Front, and readers should now look at the many books that have recently been written on that topic. The US clearly supplied Russia (USSR) (lend-lease) with material that helped the Russians before and after Stalingrad. The real Russian losses far eclipse the US and the allies. Russians had a ten to one German ratio much of the war following Stalingrad. Millions died or were lost to the cold and poor supplies. The Clash of Tetons, offers...

A. Horner: I’m a bit of a war buff, particularly WW2. I think it stems from my military background – 26 years in the Royal Artillery. I’ve read many books but this puts a whole new slant on it. Everything I’ve ever read or seen is from the British or Allies perspective and to read about the German point of view is nothing short of extraordinary.

This work was actually created by Dieter Eckhertz, who was a military journalist during the war, and after his death his grandson, Holger, has completed the book. Book one is a series of five interviews, one from each beach, of a German soldier who was in a key position on D Day. That does not mean an officer, or key person, but someone who was in the thick of the fighting. Eckhertz also must have sought out articulate, clear thinking people. Book two is a series of eight interviews of personnel in specific jobs, not necessarily about precise beaches. All interviews for both books were completed a few years after the event so the subjects needed to recall their experiences clearly. I think that had I experienced what these men went through I’d never forget it either.

Two things struck me about the testimonies. First was the...
