Kacie O: Works okay. Love the size- but it come unlocked very easily - so you might have tea leaves floating everywhere. I’m sure they vary- so you might get lucky and get one that keeps closed better.

CoLiamPet: I love making iced tea and playing around with different flavors like rose hips, mint, hibiscus, dried peaches. The downside is the mess they can make during the brewing process. I was a bit skeptical when I’d ordered this that it would do the trick but it wound up being precisely perfect. It works very well for everything I’ve thrown at it. I can mix and match different flavors together and have the room the steep them all at once. I’m thinking of getting a second so I can add even more flavors to the summer batches I plan to brew. One tip, when using items that breakdown, like hibiscus, you may want to shake the ball over the sink after you’ve filled it. This will allow any small, loose pieces to fall free from the ball and not wind up in your tea.

Expert non-expertExpert non-expert: Do you like loose leaf cold brew iced tea? Well, read on... After reading about the dangers of making 'sun tea' (google it), we started making 'fridge tea' (basically cold brew loose leaf iced tea). For years we have simply dumped 6-8 tablespoons of gunpowder black tea into a pitcher, added water and tossed into the refrigerator. A few hours later (I've always been surprised how fast this happens), it's ready to go. To serve, we would grab a strainer and strain-as-we-go. After years of this, I finally looked into 'large/jumbo infusers' and found this one. It is in a word, awesome!

We toss 1/4 cup or so of dried tea, add water and again a short couple of hours later we have tea, with one notable difference - NO Straining Required! Sure, there are a few little tea bits, but it's tea. It's natural. Now we just pour, pour, pour.... Add a little more water to make sure we get everything out of the leaves and pour, pour, pour!!!! This thing is awesome! Easily big enough to hold enough leaves for a strong pitcher of iced tea.

Pros: Large size easily holds expanded (rehydrated) volume of 1/4 cup dried tea leaves. Seems very sturdy.

Cons: If you use...

Douggee: Although the dimensions are clearly stated, this tea ball/spice ball/infuser was a lot larger than I expected - my fault and I am not deducting the one star because of that. I have a plastic sun tea jar that is less than a gallon in size and this this giant-sized tea ball will not fit through the opening. All is not lost since I do have a 1/2 gallon pitcher that I do sometimes brew my sun tea in.

In addition to brewing tea, this product should have many uses including mulling spices for cider or nearly any use where a person wants to infuse flavors. Once tea is in a pitcher this will be great for putting in fresh fruit (citrus, strawberries, pineapple, etc.) to infuse a really fresh flavor into tea. In addition, this tea ball has a twist-lock style of closing with a detent in the fully closed position - much nicer than the clasp style.

Now for the reason for the one-star deduct. I use a whole leaf tea when brewing sun tea which means most leaves are large and shouldn't escape the mesh ball. After making a pitcher of tea yesterday I found quite a few pieces of tea leaf that had somehow managed to escape the ball. The mesh is fine so I'm not...

sxsxsxsx: I make a lot of beef stock in my slow cooker. I had the idea to use it whenever I cook dried beans or rice. The problem is they all get lost in the pot amongst the bones if I just pour them in. This teaball is a perfect solution because I can put one or two servings of rice or beans in there and just hang it in the slow cooker. I take it out and have a meal right there using no pots or anything and the dried rice/beans taste amazingly rich. It's also good if you want to infuse some spices into a large stock or soup.

So far the build quality and mesh seem to be good. It does seem like these vary a bit, though. I ordered a second one later and it's a slightly different size with different sized mesh and even the chain looked different. So I think that's why there's some differing opinions on the mesh size.
