Nintendo Switch Cases & Storage Review: Which Ones Actually Protect Your Console?
Yesterday afternoon, between bouts of drizzle, I was out in the garden trying to prop up a rather optimistic runner bean that had ideas above its station. By the time I came indoors—knees creaking and hands not quite as cooperative as they once were—I put on a bit of Thelonious Monk and settled into the armchair with a cup of tea.
On the side table sat a selection of Nintendo Switch Cases & Storage I’d ordered from Amazon. The idea, apparently, is to keep your Nintendo Switch and its bits organised and protected. Sensible enough in theory. In practice, well… that’s what I set out to find.
What They Don't Tell You in the Ads
Let’s begin with the usual concerns people have before spending their money.
First, build quality. A lot of these Cases and Carrying Cases look sturdy in the photos, but in hand, some feel like they’d struggle to survive a firm sneeze. The cheaper ones in particular use thin shells and flimsy zips. You’ll want to avoid anything that flexes too easily—that’s not protection, that’s optimism.
Second, the zipper issue. It sounds minor, but it isn’t. Several cases I tested had zips that caught or felt rough. With slightly stiff fingers, that becomes a daily annoyance rather quickly.
Third, internal space and layout. Many claim to hold the console, Games, Accessories, and even Charge Controllers, but in reality, it’s often a tight squeeze. You end up forcing things in, which defeats the purpose of “Protection” entirely.

The Norfolk Stress Test
I used these cases over the course of a week, mostly moving the Nintendo Switch between the living room and conservatory, and once taking it along on a short trip to see a friend.
One case in particular—a mid-range option from Amazon’s so-called “Exclusive Selections”—did reasonably well. It had a semi-hard shell and a soft lining inside. I left it overnight in the conservatory where temperatures dipped to about 6°C. By morning, no warping, no condensation inside. That’s a good sign.
The better cases held the console snugly without pressing too hard on the analogue sticks. That’s important. Too much pressure over time can cause damage, and I’ve seen enough complaints about that in reviews.
Carrying comfort was acceptable. Most come with a small handle, though if you’ve got larger hands or limited grip strength, they can feel a bit thin and awkward.
As for storage, the card slots for Games were useful, though again, a bit fiddly. I found myself needing to concentrate more than I’d like just to slide a tiny cartridge into place.
The Annoyances
Nothing here is catastrophic, but there are several small irritations.
- Overpromised storage: Many cases claim to hold everything, but once you add Accessories, space disappears quickly.
- Cheap interiors: Some linings feel rough or poorly finished. Not what you want rubbing against your screen.
- Elastic straps: These are meant to hold the console in place, but a few were either too tight or too loose. Neither is ideal.
And frankly, some of the designs are all a bit samey—black shells with minor variations. Functional, yes, but hardly inspired.
Sifting Through the Amazon Reviews
A quick look at Amazon reviews confirms much of this.
The 5-star reviews often praise the “Great Prices” and say things like “perfect fit,” but they rarely mention long-term use. A bit suspicious.
The more believable 3-star reviews highlight:
- Zips failing after a few months
- Cases not quite fitting when you have extra Accessories attached
- Concerns about limited real Protection despite bold claims
To be fair, the better-quality cases do receive consistent praise for sturdiness and sensible layouts. It’s just a matter of avoiding the cheaper, overhyped options.
The Brass Tacks (Questions You Lot Keep Asking)
Do these cases actually protect the Nintendo Switch, or is it just for show?
Some do, but the cheaper ones are mostly for show. Look for a firm shell, not something that bends in your hand.
Can you fit everything in one case—console, Controllers, and cables?
Technically yes, practically no. It becomes cramped and awkward very quickly.
Are the zips as bad as people say?
On the lower-end models, yes. They can stick or wear out faster than you’d like.
Do you need nimble fingers to use the storage slots for Games?
Afraid so. They’re small and a bit fiddly, especially if your hands aren’t as steady as they used to be.
Who Should Walk Away?
If you’re expecting heavy-duty protection for frequent travel, most of these will disappoint.
Also, if you struggle with fiddly compartments, tight zips, or small handles, you may find these more irritating than helpful.
The Pensioner’s Verdict
The world of Nintendo Switch Cases & Storage is a mixed bag.
Some options do exactly what they should—simple, sturdy Protection for your console and Games. Others are little more than dressed-up pouches with good marketing behind them.
If you’re buying, aim for a mid-range case with a solid shell and smooth zip. Avoid the cheapest options, no matter how tempting the “Great Prices” look on Amazon.
It’s not a glamorous purchase, but a sensible one—provided you choose carefully and don’t expect miracles.
Right, the tea’s getting cold and I need to check on the tomatoes.
Cheers,
William
