Topeak HeadLux Bicycle Helmet Light – Illuminate Your Ride!

Atl Canuck: I am an avid road biker with some 35 years of experience. Because I live near the resort town of Shediac, NB summers get brutal with the traffic. I Have a flashing red/blue light on my seat post and this helmet light gives me another layer of security. It works because if I fail to turn it on before a ride, cars come closer to my bike, as they pass. The flashing light is just one more in the safety arsenal. The red could be brighter, that is always true. The front white I cannot comment on, as I do not ride at night. It is attached to my helmet with the extra piece of velcro. I wish it was a plug-in re-charge rather than a battery...but no major deal. Its not goofy looking on the helmet, rather small but powerful actually. Am pleased.

Connie A Moore: What I liked about this product: the premise - a simple illumination device that fits securely into a helmet. What I do NOT like about this product: it does NOT do what I bought it to do which is illuminate. I could have velcroed a small rock onto my helmet and gotten as much use as this. It fastens well and stays on well - it’s light. All good qualities but it does not stay lit reliably. The on/off mechanism seems faulty so it turns on but is incredibly dim then the only way to distinguish the dim light was to remove the device from the base and remove the batteries. I found this annoying and completely useless in helping me be more visible on my morning commute. I’m disappointed because I’ve always thought Topeak was a good product. Back to the drawing board for this one, folks.

stephane licina: Very bright, and works well with 2 different helmets i've tried on.

Feeling much more safe and confident on the roads.

Haven't ran out of battery yet (only had a few rides with it), so I can't comment on the batteries much.

CW: So far so good. It serves the purpose of an additional light which I put on my helmet. It has a Velcro piece which allowed me to wrap it around a helmet vent. I would have liked the Velcro piece to be about 3 inches longer so I could have more options for placement on my helmet but I did find an opening where it wrapped around and had enough surface area on the Velcro to attach. This product came to me in a timely manner.

Mr. R. HoldenMr. R. Holden: I've only just got this so my review is based on first impressions. Others have commented on brightness and reliability etc but I wanted to add that the picture used on Amazon makes the light look rather 'budget'. I wasn't expecting much but on receiving it it seems way higher quality than the picture suggests. It also (to me anyway) looks rather large in the photo so I was bit worried I'd look like I'd have some daft looking big lamp on my head but it's actually quite small and discreet and looks good on my helmet.

Only time will tell how this lasts and stands up to the British winter but so far I'm very pleased.

AC: Does just what it is supposed to - puts a headlight and taillight high up, and gives you something to aim.

Strap fits through the openings of bike helmets - only thing to watch for is if your helmet has mesh. Check the peak for bug guard mesh, though most helmets with mesh only have it at the front.

Three modes - blinking front and rear, constant front and rear, and constant front / blinking rear. Matches the most common headlight and taillight modes.

Reasonably bright - won't outshine a head and tail light and probably shouldn't. Assembly is straightforward, but read the directions. Need to take a strip out to let the batteries contact, like most bike lights.

Happy Fella: I have an ATB and a hybrid, which I ride on paved inner-city streets. But as an auto driver, I also know the importance of visibility, and how a cyclist can appear out of nowhere--especially at night.

This is a good light--functionally and design-wise. It attached easily to my Bell helmet, and has been very snug. Good illumination, with helpful features, such as the blinking modes, which aid you in being detected by drivers. Still, I would suggest it as a complement to a bike light, but not a substitute, as it doesn't have the same level of projection.

If you ride a bike at night, a decent helmet light is a smart idea. It aids in identifying you as a cyclist, and could possibly serve as a back-up should your primary light(s) fail as you are riding.
