Othman: This book is written by a passionate educator. I was worried I may end up with a theoretical and less practical treatment of the college teaching matter. On the contrary, this book is very practical and deserves to set as a reference at the desk of any educator.

The following discussion were very useful and supportive for my own views:
- Bringing students to live an experience beyond just a dry material delivery will put the biggest impact.
- Education is about motivation and understanding of our audience.
- Ideas to motivate students to make their reading assignments and engage in class discussions

It is a highly recommended read and at the end, there is a list of resources that can be used for performing the different suggested tasks.

Kindle Customer: After working in industry for 20+ years, I began teaching full-time 3 years ago. After struggling my first year, I began looking for books on teaching - and found this on Amazon. It has been the single most useful tool I have found. I originally bought the kindle version, and a few months later I bought the paperback as well - just because I found it easier to mark up and find important points. There have been so many ideas that I put into action - which have had great results. Student engagement in classes improved just after implementing a couple of ideas from the book. I refer to the book throughout the semester and am continuing to try new ideas. Norman Eng's writing style is enjoyable to read, and his examples throughout the book are helpful. I can't recommend this book enough and am really thankful I found it.

Terri: As an adjunct lecturer at a California university, I have read several books on best practices for teaching college students. I recently read Teaching College: The Ultimate Guide to Lecturing, Presenting, and Engaging Students by Norman Eng Ed.D. Can I just say WOW?

As colleges and universities slash budgets, they rely more on adjunct lecturers to teach courses. Like myself, many part-time adjuncts come from the field and can teach valuable best practices in many courses. But just because we know our field doesn’t mean we know how to effectively teach it. By reading this book, I guarantee you will come away with teaching techniques and classroom management skills that you can use today. Your own teaching will be refreshed and exciting again!

Major take-aways from this book:
-Use power point slides sparingly and rely on images and video rather than too many bullets and sub-bullets.
-Rewrite the course syllabus (where you can) by adding the benefits of the course. This chapter is GOLD!
-Focus on the student, not the content. Get to know the students. Ask them what they hope to get out of the course.

albina gabellini: This book is a very usefull teaching manual . The organization of the topics of this method, (even if it is not completely applicable to Italian Education Market,) is complete and very high quality . The new Concept to coniugate marketing strategies with students empowering is very strong. We can learn many different ways to communicate efficiently with students and let them love the subjects, the matters and getting them involved in creative discussions. I liked also the dr Eng Socratic way to let the students understanding each concept deeeply just discussing in 2 groups like . Toastmasters does. Very usefull, expecially for those who are not familiar with Latin analysis of the sentences . This system can help teachers improving their knowledge and their mindset.to transmit to their students. Clearer concepts, clearer decisions! . I strongly recomend this book to everybody who loves Education and successfully Pedagogy.. thank Norman.

Linda Noble: I am happy to to have read this book, teaching over 22 years, in public and private education with 7th through graduate level students in NYC. Why? Eng reaffirms what I believe to be true. Education is a humanistic endeavour. We are teaching students not content. Hence, Normans question in Part 1 My student enroll because “they want to be” is the call to our liberatory pedagogy. In part 2, Eng provides explicit exemplars to embraces the utilitarianism in teaching.
How to … I greatly appreciate his sidebars on student prior knowledge, jigsaw, role play, case studies and guest speakers. A highlight of Part 3 is the exemplar of Steve Jobs and the iphone roll out in 2007. A Wow metaphor for powerpoint presentations and the monologic dialogic debate (see this!!) Timmy: I know this saying gets thrown around a lot but believe me when I say… “This is a MUST read” for those already teaching in higher education, and for those who want to pursue a career in higher education as well! This book pin-points the common issues that exist in a college classroom from the perspective of not only the professor, but the students themselves who are more than just bodies with minds filling up a seat (they are human beings with life struggles).
