Ames sensibles s'abstenir...

Michael Griswold: I almost did a double take when I ran an internet search on the Norway Massacre and discovered that it was around five years ago. At the risk of making a political statement inside of a book review, it really says something when you lose track of mass shooting incidents because they have been overtaken in your memory by other mass shootings.

Åsne Seierstad in One of Us: The Story of a Massacre in Norway -- and Its Aftermath goes into downright haunting detail of Anders Behring Breivik from his troubled childhood all the way through the plotting and execution of the Massacre. As a reader, I felt genuinely creeped out at the detail Seierstad goes into because it felt like I was entering the mind of a killer, which is no place any rational person should aspire to be.

Seierstad does something special in that we don’t just meet Anders Breivik, but also several of his eventual victims—some of them stay for an extended period of time, while others are there for the briefest of moments. This both put a human face to the incident and pointed to almost scary randomness of life. One minute you are at a Labor Party camp, the next minute your dead. It was very...

b: Not only is the simple eloquence of this book hard to match, the emphasis on the stories of the victims and survivors is interwoven beautifully with the necessary, horrific narrative.
It's very rare to find a "true crime" work like this. It is WELL worth the money.
NB: all profits from the sales of her book go to a foundation administered by the families of the victims.

Ethan Cooper: ONE OF US is the story of a monstrous crime and bizarre act of terrorism. Its culmination is the gruesome 72-page chapter “Friday”, which reconstructs Breivik’s bombing of the Norwegian Prime Minister’s office (eight killed and at least 209 injured) on July 22, 2011 and his massacre a few hours later of 69 people, mostly defenseless teenagers, at a summer camp.

ONE OF US is journalism and Asne Seierstad does a tremendous job at presenting the backstory and facts of Breivik’s crimes. As she points out in her epilogue, there is a voluminous record of these crimes, due to police interrogation of Breivik, the prosecutor’s decision to investigate and document each murder, and analysis of Breivik by numerous court-appointed psychiatrists. This record enables Seierstad to present the sequence and details of many murders at the camp and even enter Breivik’s mind during his murderous spree. For example: “He fired at someone swimming. Between the trees he spied two figures. A Norwegian man and an Arab woman, he would later call them. They looked very disorientated, he thought.”

I read ONE OF US with several questions in mind. These included:

o Who...

John Neufeld: This is a toughie. We know at the start what we have to get through, and it's not joyfully anticipated. Yet there IS a moment when the reader will think to himself (herself) and say,"Get him, damnit!"
The value of this read is not in understanding the villain, but in experiencing Norway. For that is what Ms. Seierstad has done: reproduce a fairyland life in which we are subsumed, astonished, amazed that a country as sophisticated as Norway is ALSO deeply naive, unsophisticated, nearly unrelated to the rest of the world, despite its Internet connections.
The young people with whom she spends time, giving us characters, events, wishes and dreams, are as sweet and trusting and clear-eyed as the heroes and heroines in Lang's Fairy Tales. Their relationships to each other, with their parents, with the authorities are direct and human, feeling and open to shock, terror, and somehow courage. Some of them sound idealized (and may be). But these ideals are the sorts we love and have read about all our lives. We're stunned to find they actually still exist. Their parents are (in the main) likeable as well, trusting, supportive, courageous, forgiving.
Since we cannot hope to read the...
