Catherine: Very poor print. Some pages not well printed. Poor quality paper too.

Claire B.: Weather you need it to keep yourself busy, weather you seek wisdom or if you need it for your research or religious purposes it delivers every time!

Beautifully written and organized, is easy to read and comprehend and it is fascinating material
that packs wisdom from every page.

It is amazing how much we can learn from those who came before us.`

Humbling cumulative spiritual and practical wisdom of generation in one perfect volume.

Chapin: I've been finding that this is helpful in studying the Torah. It gives lots of things to think about as it is a oral tradition. It's more or less having Rabbi's right along side of you with discussing the traditions and giving you a good amount of knowledge of most every question you might have about living your life according to Torah.

With Torah 'meaning instructions ' one is always going to have questions as to what something means. With the Talmud being a discussion helping to understand the questions you have.

This particular Talmud I find alot to look forward to because it is easy to find what your looking for and then upon reading I find it gives me much understanding of what I need and am looking for.

For such a small book its absolutely packed with information that you would be looking for that applies to the life here and now. I wish I had got this a long time ago.

The only thing I wish is that it was the whole set of the Talmud because it would be so interesting, complete and I would love to read through them.

But if your looking for a version of it that could be used everyday in the gere and now I would highly recommend this. You will...

john worby: Paul quoted several times from the Talmud, we are always taught the "oral law" was not given by The Lord, but upon deeper study of scripture you will find its spoken of everywhere. So this is important book for all serious believers who want to understand from a Hebraic perspective. After all Yeshua (Jesus) was born a Jew and kept ALL his fathers Laws.

v m Collinson: A very good summary of the some of the key points in the Talmud. Easy to understand and read. Works well as a study aid, or for personal understanding. It basically paraphrases some of the main discussions around certain topics and explains why certain opinions were reached. As with the whole Talmud, it's an interpretation of opinions and Torah teachings. Would recommend as a good second stage book, as you need some basic understanding for it to make sense. It doesn't cover everything, and a more in-depth student might find it too basic. Was perfect for me though.

S. Moore: What I can I say? It's the Talmud separated into chapters with a reasonably good index. It's hard to rate this book:

1. If this review is for the Talmud itself, the Talmud is a legendary and epic revelation of theology. I'm a Christian and have learned an enormous amount from these writings. For those unfamiliar, the Talmud contains commentary on scripture (with references), traditional stories, and famous quotes of rabbinic scholars. It was compiled around 200 AD, with a rich historical background.

2. If this review is for this particular edit of the Talmud, it's a great copy. The whole Talmud is about 6,200 pages long, so obviously this book does not contain the whole thing. This book reduces the Talmud to the essential writings for the character of God and man's relationship to God. For those unfamiliar with the Talmud, this copy is an excellent starting point.

Dave Taussig: When Nero killed off the very early Jewish church leadership we also lost the early Talmud. We lost critical thinking. We lost some of the understanding of what the Apostles spoke. When one speaks of the children of the book that book is as much the Talmud as the Old Testament.Suggest getting Talmud for Idiots first if this is your first venture.

Mr. S. J. Stewart: An extraordinary piece of scholarship, summarising into a systematic form, the basic theological/spiritual/cultural paradigms which both fed and are inherent in the Talmud. This work is helpful in redirecting the reader to the extraordinarily monolithic nature of Judaism across both time and geography, in contradistinction to much scholarship which seeks to – and often helpfully – shed light on the differences between various Jewish sects and periods. Abraham Cohen helps one to remember that Judaism is and has been both consistent in respect to key ideas about God and Israel, whilst producing breadth in the detail. Cohen reminds us that if you want the same hundred answers to one question, then ask a hundred rabbis how many gods there are.

DiegoBP: I am not yet very deep into the book, but I have loved it so far. Cohen's selection of words and idioms is impeccable. The introduction is very vivid and helpful, even if you have no previous knowledge on the topic. Some basic Tanakh cognizance helps a lot, but if you're looking for books like this one then I'm sure you won't have an issue.

If I could complain about something, it'd be the dates provided for births, deaths, and other events (especially in the Introduction); not because they're wrong (how can I know), but because they seem to differ (greatly) from every other source I check. Dates aside, the content is invaluable.

This is not meant for serious Talmud study, as other have said, but I don't think that was the author's purpose when publishing. It is a thorough overview of the major teachings conveniently divided by topics, which is great to get acquainted with what the Talmud says and with the ideology of most of the Jewish population. If you're just beginning to study Talmud, I reccommend getting this book, reading it, and then moving on to a more focused one. Great purchase, no regrets.

S. Holmes: 400 pages or so of classical jewish thought.

i bought it as a reference work, but my wife loves it. She found the chapter entitled 'domestic life' to be absolutely superb containing some fascinating information which opened her eyes to the jewish perceptions of women and the home (particularly the sections on divorce and re-marriage) which helped her understand both the OT and the writings of Paul ore clearly.

for this reason alone, I have to recommend it to anyone.

but the books examines the biblical understanding of the ontology of God, cosmology, God's revelation through Torah, domestic life, social life, morality, life and death, folklore (including demons, the evil inclination, disease, etc), judicial issues and the age to come (including the messianic age).

As an eye opener to the belief system of much of second temple judaism (the time of jesus and the apostles) it is worth owning.
