Mina Admire: I have been a fan of the Core Knowledge series since the 1990s. This series is without a doubt the best resource for any parent/grandparent intent on providing or supplementing a top-notch, well-rounded education for their children/grandchildren. The thing I like most is the books are written at a grade-level reading. So, my children were able to do a lot of self-learning which gave them the opportunity to dig deeper into the subjects that most interested each of them. I cannot recommend these books enough!! I can't wait to get my grandchildren immersed with a love for learning!

Brandi Yvonne: Each year I purchase a copy of the Core Knowledge series for the grade level my son is in. All the books are wonderful for filling in some areas of learning. However, What Your Third Grader Needs to Know had a questionable story, that, in my personal opinion, should not be in a child's learning material. Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves is highly inappropriate for children, as it contains nothing but a series of murders to basically hush people up for a secret that was discovered! Very poor choice to include this in a third graders learning curriculum. If I recall correctly, I discovered another inappropriate story in a younger grade version as well when we did those. Although I do not think I reviewed it. All in all, I do feel these books are beneficial, especially to homeschool families, but please err on the side of caution and make sure you read the material BEFORE presenting it to your children.

HomeschoolingSLP: This has everything you need to know and then some written out so that you can come up with your own lesson plans basically. No worksheets, no fluff, just the nitty gritty. Everything is written as if you are just reading the book to your kids. It would be your responsibility to come up with additional work to go along with it. We already have math and language arts curriculum, but I use this book to create unit studies for science and history. We call it cozy reading time, hop up on the couch with this book and many others like Magic Tree House or The Who Was Series and reference books from the library and dive into whatever science or history subject is next. It is a great guide for me to know what to teach during the year and it helps me plan my year of subjects. My kids LOVE listening to the history and science portions and doing an activity afterward. It is their favorite part of our day. Many people might not find history or science important for 3rd and 1st graders, but it sure does spark excellent thought processes which lead to improved english and math skills believe it or not. The information in these sections are fascinating even for me. I've learned soo much from...

Andy & Ari: I became familiar with this series because the charter school our daughter had been at used to recommend them for parents to have to be able to go over sections with our kiddos if they missed school, etc. So I had the books from some of the previous grades, but I noticed I hadn't really been using them that much so I had decided to stop buying them.
Then I became an accidental homeschooler, totally thrown into it in a manner I did not expect and had to hit the ground running fast a couple of months into her school year. I used different curriculums from different companies for the subjects, because I wanted to pick and choose what I felt best met her needs in each area. And I bought this to make sure I could fill in the gaps and reinforce certain key topics. So I used this for supplemental reading for her, and I myself read through the pages. I think it does a great job of touching the bases of the topics needed to be covered for that year, and I imagine that something like this could be used as a base on which you could build your overall teaching efforts off of. I don't think this alone is completely enough to account for an entire year worth of education or activities,...
