Mark Bierman: It didn’t keep me up at night, but the next time I jump into dark water I’m going to be a tad more mindful of exactly what might be lurking beneath my toes. McMahon paints a creepy scenario that spans generations, flitting proficiently between two timelines about supernatural occurrences at the same location.
In the beginning, at least, this tale seems all about perspective. Some say the water is cursed while other’s deem it miraculous. Is it delusion or reality? That’s what drew me in. I enjoyed the tension; the sense of witnessing a gathering storm when pregnant clouds are closing in. You just know it’s going to open up at any moment.
I wanted redemption for the long-suffering Lexie, and for Jax to get her head out of the tediously sterile textbook version of life and embrace the supernatural.
There’s a slow but steady unravelling of the mystery surrounding Jax’s family history in connection with the pool.
My only issue, and one that’s a pet peeve of mine, is the use of parenthesis. Thankfully just a sprinkling of them. Seriously! What is up with those things, lately?
I recommend this read to those who enjoy a spooky read with a...

Amazon Customer: This book kept me turning page after page. I could not put it down. It was well written and I absolutely loved the back and forth between time periods.

MrsLeif: Creepy. Oh so creepy!
Usually, when I read a book, I read it all in one sitting. I like to know what happens. Well, this is one of those few times when I had to put the book away. It happened around the 50% mark. I got so spooked that I couldn’t continue reading.
The story is an interesting one. Famous springs that are whispered to grant wishes. Sick people getting better after bathing or drinking the spring water. However, there is a price to pay.
Are you willing to pay the price?
The Drowning Kind has two timelines.
One is told by Ethel O' Shay Monroe. Ethel is a young woman who recently married a doctor. She has a happy marriage except that she's having fertility issues. She wants nothing more than to become a mother but despite trying, no baby is making an appearance. Her husband plans a visit to a grand new hotel and their miracle springs, Brandenburg Springs Hotel and Resort in Vermont. Ethel starts to believe that the springs could be the answer for them.
The other timeline is told by Jax in 2019. Jax is a social worker who has to travel to her grandmother's home, Sparrow Crest, after finding out that her estranged sister, Lex,...

Susan M. Baumann: This is a heavily plot-driven ghost/horror story with two timelines. We meet Jax and Lexie, sisters, who spent summers at their grandmother’s estate in the 1970’s. We also learn of Ethel and Will Monroe, who built the original home in 1930. They purchased the land, where a grand hotel once stood on the same property, before a tragic fire. They long for a child, and will do anything to realize that dream. They eventually have a daughter, whose health is perpetually fragile. All of this is the backstory and backdrop of a somewhat-eerie tale, centered around a spring-fed pool behind the home, where several drownings have occurred. Locals tout the water’s medicinal and miraculous properties, while others warn of a malevolent curse tied to the pool’s many deaths. While the story is atmospheric, and the drama is sufficient to keep the pages turning, there are some implausible elements, and I’m not referring to supernatural moments. First, the ominous pool is comprised of of frigid, black and noxious water. Why are healthy people swimming in it? Why would they want to? Because so many people had lost their lives at this location, why weren’t more precautions taken? Also, Jax,...

violet littleton: I have never been creeped out by a book before. But this one has me a little nervous to sleep in the dark. I have no idea if it was crazy or actual haunting. The author does a rear job building a story that seems concrete but still open to interpretation. Like you ask yourself is this happening or is it imagined. Either way a great read. Especially during spooky season
