The Coleman Evanston Camping Tent: A Dome Tent with a Built-In Screen Room

Sarah MoeSarah Moe: I usually use a 4 person sundome or a small backpacking tent and go bare bones, so this was a departure for me, but I wanted more space for a music festival where I knew pack weight didn't matter and I'd want to be comfortable. I chose this one as a great price point for the size and the patio, and have been really happy with it so far.

The tent sets up easily and quickly, but it is a little difficult to do alone if you're not tall. I'm 5'6" and was not able to reach over the top- I had to have someone help me with the rainfly.

The patio is so, so worth it. It's nice to have a place to sit outside of the sleeping area, and it also functions as an additional barrier to bugs getting in the tent. It's quite spacious and fits a couple camp chairs inside or has enough space you could sleep there. I like that the rain fly goes over it to provide a little shade and rain protection. The only downside is that it's a little tough to get the outer zippers closed tightly, and they come apart quite a bit when you go in and out. Roxy: My previous tent, I owned and used for more than 15 years. I needed an upgrade and bought this one back in 2019. I have only used this tent 3 times since then and already the top section that holds the poles has ripped. Not impressed on the durability. :(

EricEric: The delivery was fast and packed safely. No mis-stitched seams. All parts are there. Although the flooring was not made whole, theres an interconnection that were glued to each end (2nd pic). It looks like a manufacturing defect. I worry that rain water may seep in in the long run. I have not tried camping with this tent yet and im hoping it will not cause any trouble to us. No more issues aside from it.

Amazon Customer: We used it for one camping trip so I can't say how durable it is but it poured almost the entire time and we were snug and dry all the time. The screen area is good as it creates a place to take off shoes and minimizes dirt from outside to inside the tent but as others said it would've been nice if it was entirely covered. There was a pool after the rain in the screen area. Although with two small holes on the two sides it was easy the empty the water.
It is not a particularly warm tent for temperatures around 5c. We added another tarp between the tent and its main rain cover to add another layer to the top mesh area. That helped a lot with the draft. Setup was fairly easy and we are not pros. Very nice and roomy for a family of four. I wish it had more hooks and pockets for hanging stuff.

Matt: I'm sure this review could easily be four stars for a lot of people, but when I compare performance to my expectations, this by far exceeded them. We've been camping in around Ontario where 2017 has been a crazy year for rain that has produced an apocalyptic swarm of bugs. The screened porch on this tent has been all that makes our trips tenable; that feature has single handily saved our camping season.

What makes the Coleman models unique is that the screened porch is actually part of the tent and not the tarp. A lot of camping companies have this style of porch, but that additional screened portion is often just the tarp extending and creating an canopy. With this tent, the screened area is part of the tent's frame itself, and can act as a beautiful porch even with the tarp pulled back.

Some notable features:
- I'm 5'9, and can stand fully upright inside the tent proper, but have to bend slightly when moving in the porch
- Three lawn chairs can comfortably be setup inside the screened porch
- Just be aware, this sucker is heavy; you will not be backpacking with this tent. It's comes with a very large bag that, because of it's size and heft, cannot be...

LogisticalNightmare: All I can say is WOW! I will never doubt Coleman products again.

Here's what I thought: I wasn't expecting much from this product. In fact, I have doubted the quality of Coleman products for some time after some bad experiences with other items. However, I purchased the Evanston 6 for my family of 4 plus some gear because of its low cost and the fact that it has a much smaller footprint and would be easier to manage than my 12 person Eureka for a trip that would require setting up (and taking down) multiple times at different campsites. It was also more roomy than my 3 person REI Taj 3 tent that I use for backpacking and I was looking for that. I bought it hoping that it would last through one or two camping trips, and I was hoping that it wouldn't be windy or rain during my trip because I was afraid that the quality of this tent would not be up to the task.

Here's what I got: It arrived and I took it outside to set up. There were the notorious wire stakes that Coleman is known for.
