Wussten Sie, dass Abraham Lincoln Regimegegner ohne Gerichtsverfahren und ohne, dass überhaupt eine Anklage vorlag, in Schutzhaft nehmen ließ und damit als erster und einziger US-Präsident den Habeas Corpus Akt, also eine der wesentlichen Säulen der Verfassung der Vereinigten Staaten mit Füßen getreten hat? Man erfährt, wer bei den zynischen, blutigen Gemetzeln alles behauptete Gott auf seiner Seite zu haben und muss unwillkürlich an Bob Dylan denken. Gestern Abend las ich im zweiten Band noch etwas erstaunliches: Die Taktik, den Gegner "weißbluten zu lassen, stammt nicht von Falkenhayn. Lincoln hat sie erfunden. Er hat einfach ausgerechnet, dass es aufgrund der Demographie kein Problem sei, wenn die Nordstaaten in jeder verlorenen Schlacht doppelt so viele Opfer beklagen müssen, wie die Südstaatler (wobei ich nicht glaube, dass Lincoln im Ernst jemand beklagte, aber da mag ich ihm unrecht tun). Und nach 20 Schlachten wären alle Südstaatler tot und noch genug Yankees übrig. Das war honest Abe. Und Grant, Sherman und Sheridan waren...

Simone Degl'Innocenti: One of the best history and military strategy books I have read and, honestly, I read a lot.

The books are so well written (they are 3) that you follow the events forgetting that you know yet the end.

Duane Schneider: I'm a picky reader, often seeking faults with the books I read, but if there were many faults with the first volume of Foote's "The Civil War," they were this reader's, not the author's. There should be a caveat before beginning this series, however: it is not for casual fans of history like myself. Each volume is over 800 pages long. Foote, to his credit, describes the troop movements and battles from the perspective of the time in which they were fought, but place names and battle names have since changed, so it was occasionally unclear to me to which battle he was referring. We are given the same limited information about the enemy that the generals had at the time, which helps to explain many of the decisions made, but it can be a bit confusing, especially when both sides were promoting and demoting leaders left and right during the first couple years of the conflict until they had their starting lineups. Foote was especially adept at describing the battles themselves, whether land battles or naval campaigns. As someone who has always valued literature above other types of writing, my first requirement for any book, regardless of genre or topic, is the level of prose. At the...

Mike Powers: “The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 1- Fort Sumter to Perryville,” by Shelby Foote, is the first of three volumes covering the American Civil War (1861-1865). This volume describes the first two years of the war: 1861-1862. Here readers will find a detailed chronicle of the war's earliest battles. These include Fort Sumter, Shiloh, the two Battles of Bull Run, the Peninsula campaign, Stonewall Jackson’s masterful Valley campaign, and Antietam. The first volume also describes many lesser-known battles as well.

“Fort Sumter to Perryville” also recounts the beginnings of the parallel careers of the war's great antagonists. Jefferson Davis resigns from the U.S. Senate in 1861 and becomes President of the Confederate States of America. Meanwhile, U.S. President-elect Abraham Lincoln enters Washington DC in disguise.
