Little H.: It takes a moment to figure out the hinge in either axis and get it assembled, but then... I like these boxes quite a lot. They won't last forever, but they should last ten full years before they need to be replaced. They fit a very wide variety of electrical gear from switches to duplex and simplex outlets of all common sizes, including GFI. They aren't waterproof but they're weathertight. It's possible to force water into them, but you'd have to be trying. Normal weather should never intrude into the box.

Some normal-axial plugs will actually fit inside with the cover closed, but certainly not all. It's worth your time to buy some right-angle plugs, which fit gloriously inside with room to spare and are very easy to install.

These will save you from having to trudge around the outside of your house, resetting your GFI outlets, in the pouring rain.

Average Joe: I used this to install an outdoor outlet on an exterior wall of a shed with a 2 foot eave. Installation is fairly straightforward and went smoothly.

I would opt for a different box if I were placing this in an open area which is constantly being rained on and exposed to sunlight. This type of box is more suited to an exterior home wall which is already somewhat protected from the rain.

Build quality seems about right for the price point. I would say overall this is a lighter duty box.

fpltdcfpltdc: The installation procedure was not difficult at all and was very straightforward. Removed old outlet cover and replaced receptacle. Did not need to put in a GFCI outlet as these outlets are already protected by a GFCI outlet upstream in the wiring. Will replace the power strip I currently have plugged in with another I just ordered that has a flat plug that should prevent having to put the cord through that awkward curve as seen in the picture. Contrary to some reviews, this cover can indeed be locked if needed, although it will have to be a lock with a thinner shackle as the hole isn't that large, as can be seen. Added a bead of caulk around the top and sides of the cover to ensure it will be waterproof from those sides, but it remains to be seen if the whole thing will truly be weatherproof. Perhaps a pressure washing of the patio is called for to test this feature. Will update review to rate the cover's water resistance features.

DamienDamien: First, I replaced the existing receptacle a week earlier with the GFCI it should have had to begin with. Grrrr.

You can see the existing box has only one cable guide at the bottom making it somewhat difficult to route two cables into the box.

Tips for installing the new box:

1. Some of the negative reviews mentioned that they broke the box when they tried to snap the pre-scored closures out. I solved this by cutting the vertical part with a hack saw and then filing the rough edge in the rounded section. A chainsaw file works very well for this.
2. I have a brick exterior so I added silicone across the top and part way down the sides of the box prior to mounting it. I added additional beads of silicone across the top and down the sides after tightening things up. Should be immune to water running down the wall.
3. The stout molded plug on my 12/3 cord pretty much fills the little box, so maybe only one device connected in that fashion. The other is a simple 2-wire polarized plug end of light enough gage (for a simple light circuit) that I can steer it to the other outlet.
