Smart Strip Advanced Paint Remover by Dumond Chemicals, Inc. - 1 Quart

Ann Neris: Yes the smell won't bother you but only if you cover the area treated, with plastic. Today is my 3rd day working with this stripper, first 2 days left it on for hours thinking it was the only way to remove 4 layers of paint.
My kitchen counters are original to the house made in 1943. The wood is a lot better than what you get today, so no way I am getting rid of them. In order to give them a makeover I have to get rid of 4 layers of paint.
I brush a nice layer of this stripper, cover it with plastic and let it seat until the next day, all the paint came out with the plastic when I pull it off. So I decided to give it less time, it only end up needing 3 hours, the paint effortlessly came off with the plastic.
I then try doing it without the cover, and that was my mistake, the smell in no time made it to the living room, is not an unpleasant odor, it smells like Wilton frosting, but in no time I start feeling dizzy and felt pressure in my head. I cover the stripper, open all doors and place my husband industrial big fan in the living room for a few minutes, that fix the problem.

Karen J McCain: This product is AMAZING!!!!! I recently stripped paint off our kitchen cabinets and restained them. It was an awful job, made much worse by the stripping products I used, at least until I found Smart Strip. I bought at least 3 different brands at the big box home improvement stores, some of which were marketed as "Premium" and "Maximum Strength". The only thing that was maximum strength was the toxic odors. Not only did they not work but almost sent me to the ER, despite my best efforts to follow the directions and precautions for use. I then found a review of Smart Strip and decided to try it. This stuff is truly a wonder!! Not only is it NOT going to kill you with fumes, it actually works!!! It adheres to the surfaces and actually strips off the paint, usually with a single application. It cut my work in half, really probably in a quarter, as I was not having to apply the stripper over and over to get the paint off. I honestly don't know how they sell the other stuff. Don't waste your time buying the other products. Just start here.....save yourself the headaches and get the good stuff from the start. You won't regret it. Kristie Johnson: I used this to remove ceiling paint that was peeling (moisture problem). It did better than I expected. There was a noticeable odor, but it was tolerable. I did have to leave it on the full 24 hours. And there were a few sections that I had to reapply to finally get it to lift. But given that it was the ceiling, I did not cover it with plastic as recommended and there were several layers of very old paint, I am overall very happy with how it worked. Ad I have several more projects in mind.

Amazon Customer: The smell is lighter than usual but still completely toxic. And it still smells quite a lot. It is written on the container that inhalation of this product is dangerous and it’s better to work outside. Not for sensitive people.
The cover was very difficult to remove. The waxy paper from the company can be replaced with plastic rap or similar product.
I tried to remove water based polyurethane from the wood countertop and it was not that easy. A lot of product was needed and it took time to work. It worked better than the orange stuff I tried before and better than Klean. But still very messy. And with flat surface like my wooden countertop sanding would probably be easier.
After doing some paint and poly removal I would not recommend to start such projects indoors unless you absolutely have to. Leave it as it is, throw it into the trash and buy something new, or hire a professional and leave the house for couple of days. Because pain strippers are all toxic and messy.

FishMan: Works well, especially for things that have multiple coats of paint on them.

For wood: This will eat the paint, but it softens the paint so much that bleeding into the wood will occur. When you get down to the last layer of paint you're going to need to sand, there's no way around it. BUT it's so much better than trying to sand from the get go.
