William Breckenridge: Yes, these are black and oily. Yes, they are 1/4 inch inside and NOT way larger, so they fit great.
I put them all on a rag, sprayed with WD-40, wiped all the "black oil" off and put them in my container (my fingers stay clean when using them).
If you need a shine and bright washer then order stainless. If you want a good fitting 1/4 inch at a good price, this is a good deal.

Ryan: These washers were really helpful in spreading the load from a bolt over a larger area so that the bolt didn't go through the hole. They did a pretty good job at this, but I'm always encouraging companies to improve the products they are releasing. Maybe there is a new design for this that the company could come out with and improve it. Maybe it could be like heart shape or a cookie or maybe I could have my name engraved on it, or maybe it could have blue tooth or wifi and make me subscribe to a cloud service which will eventually go out of business and then all of my structures will fail. Just throwing ideas out there.

I saw these were Amazon’s Choice and they were less than half the cost of zinc-plated washers as you can see from the photo, so I bought them. When they arrived, I was disappointed because of the finish. I first thought Amazon had sent me the wrong item, but, no it was correct. It was then that I noticed the words, “Plain Finish,” in the description. I hadn’t noticed that when I placed my order.

So, what is “plain finish?” It is simply the as produced finish with a thin coat of oil to mitigate corrosion during storage. If you remove the oil, you have no corrosion protection, which is ok if you are using these washers in a dry, indoor application. The photo shows the washers we received. They are not shiny as indicated in picture accompanying their description. They are not plated. They are oily.

While the description claims they are 0.065” thick (about 1/16”), I found that about 20% were only 1/32” thick. While they should still do the job, the thin washers may bend when you tighten down on them.

M. S. Walker: I purchased these a few years back for the shop and had recently run out. I went to reorder them and noticed in the description that it said they were Plain Finish which threw me off as to whether I was ordering the correct ones - so I ended up getting a different brand instead. Now, every time my husband needs a washer he asks me "where are the black ones" I have to remind him that we used them all and to get one of the replacements. He doesn't like the replacements though they too are of good quality, he prefers these. So now, after reading the reviews I see that these are the ones I first ordered - and to keep him content I'm reordering several packs... He just likes these to any others.
The black finish or coating didn't seem to rub off the ones I received. We've used them for lots of projects and have gotten great results. A few of the uses have been outdoors - exposed to all types of elements for 4+ years and there's no rust or signs of degrading on them.
Well, as long as Amazon has them available these will be the only ones I'll order from now on.
