Key Features:

Joseph Dagnese was one of the 56 brave men who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. As a signer of this historic document, Dagnese has been remembered for centuries as a hero of the American Revolution. However, his courage in signing the Declaration also brought him great misfortune. Many of the signers were hunted by the British and their families were persecuted. In spite of the risks, Dagnese remained a staunch patriot and his signature stands as a testament to the courage of the Founding Fathers.

Comments

D. W.: This book is an excellent balance of fact written with a sense of humor. The details shared and the different fates of the signers represent the amazing and the humdrum. Cheers to this excellent work of scholarship and sarcasm!

Robin L Buchholz: I thought I would open up the book and just take a look at the first chapter. Sat for two hours reading! Could not put it down. Very accessible language. Passing onto my daughter for their "read aloud" list. I think this is something that parents should share with their children. Especially since we are so far removed from the actual events covered in the book, and none of us are aware of what they went through to get us the freedoms we now have. With all that is in the news - this is very on point.

Mr. R. E. J. Hyson: Make sure that you get the genuine HARDBACK book , complete with book-jacket (which doubles as a facsimile of the Declaration. Twice, I ordered what I thought would be a hardback copy, only to find I received a paperback advance reading copy (which is missing various components including jacket). This book is written in a fairly flippant style, rather as though it had been written by adolescents for adolescents. To quote "As usual, Georgie-boy needed money for his troops, and Morris supposedly got a commitment for the large sum.......A well-funded Washington proceeded to cross the Delaware shortly thereafter and kicked some Hessian butt." I would have thought a subject as important as this deserved a little more gravity. Having said this, the book does contain some interesting biographical detail as regards the fame and misfortune of the signers. This differs from other books which tend to concentrate on their "day jobs".

LACAR: Ordered this book for Christmas for a daughter who homeschools her children and a son who is a middle school history teacher (and myself!) but had to wait because it was out of print so they just arrived last week. It's packed with wonderful information and in a format that's easy to read. I also liked the cover that transforms into a copy of the constitution. I started to read and it wasn't long before I was a little disappointed at the modern slang used by the authors but just figured it was to make it easier for the casual reader. Then I began to run across profanity and was disappointed. What could have been a real treat for 12 years olds to learn some fascinating history should now probably be off limits. I just don't understand why the authors thought it necessary to sully a good little book with words that some families do not allow. Sorry, it's such a good idea and has stories that we as Americans should all know but I can't recommend it to everybody . . . including my 91 year old mother who would be offended by the statement in the section on James Wilson ". . . he was always one damn fine lawyer." Just thought you ought to know . . .
