San Diego Hat Company Women's Ultrabraid Sun Hat with Extra-Large Brim

Mimi: I have a huge head and nice hats are nearly impossible to find. I usually settle for a “men’s hat” but they aren’t as cute. I had a vacation coming up and needed a hat for the trip (need minimal sun exposure for skin condition reasons). Took a chance on this hat and it fits! Got a ton of compliments on it too. I folded it up lightly in my luggage and it reshaped itself without distortion.

Quality:
This hat is very sturdy and made with good quality. It is very big making it awkward to pack for vacation. It does slightly fold/wrap and unfolds nicely without damaging the brim. I didn’t try pressing it flat and putting it a suitcase for fear I would snap the spine in the brim. Nonetheless, it made it to Mexico and back in my carryon bag with no problem.

Size/fit:
This is why I gave it 4/5 stars. I have an abnormally huge head circumference. So, while it did squeeze my head a bit, I’m used to that with hats. However, I wish this hat had just a little stretch. I know that’s not typical in woven hats, but it would have been nice. If you have an average size head, it should fit perfectly or even a little big.

Sun protection:
It definitely blocks the sun. The brim is huge and bendable. So, you can position it however you need to block the sun. I will say, I got EXTREMELY HOT while wearing it. This could be because it is black or the material is made from. However, I think it’s due to my abnormally big head and how it holds heat easily. DH: I like the size of the brim. Wish it wasn't so floppy--may sew a wire in. I may do that when I sew the hat to repair it. After approx 5 times wearing it the stitching came undone separating the top of the hat. I can repair it but should have been stitched better.

Natalia D.: Ok tengo que editar mi opinión inicial: El sombrero se ve muy elegante y llamativo. Es enorme. El ala podría ser más rígida, definitivamente. No tiene alambré de metal para darle la forma, que lastima. Medio cae por lo que tengo que batallar un poco para colocarla de tal manera que no me tape la vista. Tarde pero entendimos al final que el moño que tiene arriba es para ajustar el sombrero a la circunferencia de la cabeza. Aunque al ajustarlo se forma una arruga sin embargo no se nota tanto. El nudo del moño con el tiempo se afloja, tendré que fijarlo con algo. Extraño un cordón para amarrarlo por debajo de la barbilla. No lo tiene prediseñado. Además, al sombrero le salían muchos hilos por todos lados y que tuve que cortarlos manualmente.
Pero me gustó que tiene factor de protección solar, a simple vista casi no filtra luz solar y es más ligero que unos sombreros similares de otras marcas que he probado en vivo entonces no me va a cansar tanto el cuello en el final del día.

Update July 2, 2019: Have had this hat a month, wear it every day in the sun and it has FADED. You'd think a sunhat would be made of more colourfast material. Very disappointed, especially considering my old sunhat never faded at all. I have attached pictures showing the comparison between the original colour and the new faded one. 6-6-22: While it's definitely not a hat to wear every day for hours in the direct sun for a month nonstop... that's fair, honestly, I doubt the designers really thought a person would buy it and wear it as part of their everyday kit. I'm readjusting my rating because sun fading is sort of impossible to really fight at the scale I was using the hat. It lasted a REALLY long time and kept my skin from getting burnt and took a helluva beating considering it was being used every day by a homeless person (me) all summer.

This hat was purchased as a replacement for another hat of the same colour, that sadly was not made of sturdy stuff, and ripped apart when the wind pulled it off my head.

Donavan: Okay, it's TRUE. Everyone is telling the TRUTH. This hat's brim is ENORMOUS. Bigger than you'll expect even if you hold a yardstick up to your head. I suggest you cut out a piece of poster board to match the brim size, put it on your head, and see how you feel. Me, I LOVE IT, and I am not a hat person. Here's why I love it. This hat keeps the sun off my face, neck, shoulders, and throat. Oddly, this hat is more attractive on me (there's a reason I'm not a hat person) than almost any other hat I've ever tried. I think because it's so big you just take it on its own terms. It is what it is! In a good way! Also, the crown is not very tall compared to other hats, but is tall enough that you can wear your bangs back in a little clip or pony tail on top of your head. And, the crown circumference isn't as big as it usually is on a women's hat labeled "one size fits all". It's still a little too big for me (I have a tiny head). The decorative cord around the outside can be pulled tighter, to take up some slack, but I think it slips loose again. Also, this adjustment rumples the hat a little.
