Bruce Turry: Never fails to make history fascinating and enthralling. His ability to make the reader feel as if he ( she ) were actually there is his most important accomplishment as an author

Erik Martenson: While not as well known as the battle of Thermopylae, where the 300 stood with King Leonidas, Plataea was the deciding battle where an alliance of Greek city states, including that of Sparta, ultimately defeated the Persian army under Xerxes and general Mardonius. That was probably the catalyst for the combining of the many city states into a unified Greece, because they could see how strong they were together, on land and at sea.
A very good book that I enjoyed all the way, even at the slower chapters, and I look forward to the next one (Lion), about the son of Xanthippus: Pericles, the statesman.

Zepsis: I love books by Conn Iggulden. His take on historical fiction captivates you and takes you into the people not just the time. A big fan of ancient Greek this book and the one before brought new light onto a well trodden path and did well not to dwell on Thermopylae as so many others do but actually focus on the other heroes of that time.

Dale B. Woodhouse: Tells the story of the end of Xerxes invasion of Greece with the burning of Athens and the Persian defeat at Salamis. The Greeks have a short respite only to experience another invasion a year later culminating at the Battle of Salamis. Up steps the hero.

Amazon Customer: This book solidified my waning away from Conn Books. he captured my imagination with the Genghis series and followed that up with a riveting Emperor series. The books have gradually lost their luster since then. Other authors are more interesting. My favorite author has become just one of the writers I consider for my next purchase.

BobM: Conn Iggulden is always to be relied on for bringing history to life, and this book is no exception. I am very familiar with the background, having read Herodotus as part of my classical studies, and there is no subsititute for going directly to the great master for a most easy and enjoyable read about everything that he ever came across during his life, as well as a detailed account of the Persian Wars. Conn brings it to life also, but in a diferent way, by providing all the dialogue that Herodotus omits (being a historian, not a novelist). Of course, he takes a few liberties with the facts as they are actually known from contemporary sources, but this is entirely legitimate in a fictionalised re-telling. We cannot now know everything that happened back then, and Conn provides a plausible explanation for some of the things about which we do not now the specific detail. He's also good at recreating a society and a political landscape which is utterly different from ours, and yet formed the basis of the democracy (well, oligarchy except for the three weeks before a general election!) in which we live today. If the Persians had won, absolutely nothing whatsoever would have been the...

Rapheal's wings: It is well researched and does give you a feel for the Politics that may have motivated the individuals involved here. Do not get me wrong, I enjoyed the read but had to put it down a couple of times to think about it. It was a little dry in 1 or two areas. But I did come back to it. The author definetly makes you aware of what's fact and Fiction, maybe a little more speculation would have helped.

Clemens A. Schoonderwoert: This fantastic Greek adventure is the 2nd volume of the excellent "Athenian" series, from the formidable author, Conn Iggulden.
At the beginning of the book you'll find a well drawn map of the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC, and a list of Military terms, Locations, Characters, Additional words and the Ten Tribes of Athens.
At the back of the book you'll encounter a very well documented Historical Note, where the historical details are superbly explained, and on the inside at the end of the book you'll find a drawing about the Battle of Plataea in 479 BC.
Storytelling is once again of a top-notch quality, all characters, real historical and great fictional, come splendidly to life within this Ancient Greek story, while the dark atmosphere of Athens as well as the Greek/Persian conflict come superbly off the pages.
The book is divided into 4 parts, and each part starts with a short phrase, the first two from Homer's 'The Iliad", and the final two from the Greek playwright, Aeschylus, and the main story is about the invasion of the City-States of Greece by King Xerxes of Persia, by land and sea, resulting in the twofold sacking and burning of Athens, before...

Kindle Customer: Conn has away of making history and it's story come alive. Not glorifying the battle field of revelling in the bloodshed as some writers do. Each person written about telling his own truth with no frothy emblishments.
