federica: I have always wanted to read this book since I watched the movie because I was fascinated by Mandela's story and its resilience throughout the years in prison. The movie for obvious reasons lacks details, and it's not as powerful as the story told by Mandela himself. I have to say that it is a difficult book because of his political content.
This book, though, should be read in schools because too many people do not know what colonialism has meant and means nowadays and what racism does to people's lives.

Stan Kuiperi.: This rating is for the book, yes, but much more so for the life experience Nelson Mandela shares with us. Its about achieving the ultimate level of humanity. It shows us the state of mind to nurture when embarking on that long walk to the light at the end of the tunnel. It is so essential it's fitting for each of our lives, no matter who you are, where you live, or which Freedom you are destined to fight for.

HMPatterson: The belief, that Mr Mandela had before his imprisonment and during his prison sentence, that one day he would overcome apartheid was very strong indeed. This knowing that he could put an end to this system, was developed through his upbringing and education. Recommend reading this.

Cody AllenCody Allen: The European global expansion that started in the 15th century brought a destructive and oppressive centuries-long tide of colonization to the rest of the world. From Africa to India to North and South America, the white European travelers saw land and people that were different from themselves, and, in a stunning move of incomprehensible hubris, declared these things their own. Similar to many freedom fighters around the world, Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to breaking these chains of oppression in his home country of South Africa.

From a young age, Mandela was raised to be an advisor to the local African chief in his native Transkei region of South Africa. Because of this, he was allowed the privilege of education. He began studying law at the age of 25 at the University of Witwatersrand and was the only black student. That same year, he joined the African National Congress, a group that would be the centerpiece of the political drama of his life. The ANC was the main political organization opposed to the government’s policies of apartheid, which literally translates to ‘apartness,’ and “represented the codifications in one oppressive system of all the laws...

Robert Walker: Before starting the rest of this review, I’m not going to spoil any of the emotional impact that this book will guarantee to give you. By half way through you’ll be through nearly all the emotion’s possible & a couple of boxes of tissues too. I’m going to tell you about the impact this compelling story about a young boy from a very very poor family and his struggles put in front of him and how it eventually led him to be the leader of the New South Africa & an inspirational figure to all of us, be we South African or not. I’m from Scotland just to clarify.

The first time I read this book was just shortly after it’s release and I was looking for a good book for a long flight from Schipol Amsterdam to Cape Town on KLM. The flight seemed to be just 5-10 minutes as I couldn’t put this masterpiece that Madiba has written about compassion, being stronger and rising above the wrongdoings and preventing it from happening again. His stoic nature but the warmth and kindness with his eyes smiling along with his actual smile too ….. The first thing that I noticed about the book was it’s written in a way that as you read it you can hear him reading it just a...

Garth R. Mailman: Went looking for this after encountering the CBC's synthesis of the 50 hours of tapes recorded by Nelson Mandela before writing the book broadcast on Ideas. As in public life so in his own private biography Madiba is self-effacing, candid about his own short-comings, loyal to his supporters over the years. As the story continues we meet many of the people who would be active in the African National Congress in the future and his partners seeking freedom for Africans in South Africa.

At 658 pages in paper binding this is no light read but Mandela's writing style is engaging and serves to carry one along. We see his growth from a rural tribal background to life in a tribal chief's home. His friendship with his adopted brother, their mutual escape from their home to Johannesburg where Mandela begins his struggle to become a lawyer, copes with being an African among whites, and becomes politically aware. Any great man makes it to the top on the backs of others; it is good to see this man remember and acknowledge those who helped him reach that pinnacle.

By page 150 or part 3 we have reached Mandela's political awakening and the beginnings of his involvement with the...
