Judith Deaton: I loved this book. I have met Dr. Tuttle and he is a kind, very dedicated, engaging advocate for bats, that truly have been misunderstood.

This account of his lifelong pursuit to change our perceptions of the world of bats to our delight and economic prosperity is frankly exciting and filled with his worldwide adventures encountered along with teams of scientists, volunteers, benefactors, and politicians who are actively researching, promoting and changing for the better, through persistence, the fate of these lovely creatures.

It would be a great introduction to conservation for children old enough to appreciate the message and for anyone who wishes to learn how to bring others to an understanding of the need for conservation measures.

Jim C: What a great book. The author is one of the pioneers of bat research and preservation. His adventures researching bats are amazing in their own right and give the book spice.

I learned so much natural history from this book. Reading that bats need caves at different temperatures to roost depending on migrating, nursing pups or wintering while the authors os dodging moonshiners and trying to end his bat research career prematurely due to stupidity while caving is what makes this book amazing.

So glad I read this!

Robin D Seed: The book is very readable and makes the science a lot of fun. Dr. Tuttle is a fearless adventurer many times going to the end of the earth to understand, conserve & eliminate human prejudices against this wonderful creature. He is a little crazy, crawling into ammonia filled caves, or hollow trees that also might house an odd cobra, or hanging off the side of a balloon basket to get better photos of flying bats! The man has achieved success in protecting bats and shifting our understanding of these extremely sophisticated mammals, who provide an invaluable service to man by feeding on insect pests such as mosquitoes and moths who's caterpillars cause immense damage to crops.

Vivien Reichardt: Captivating tale of a young biologist wanting to show the real side of bats to the world! Adventurous, very informational, impossible to put down!
Dr. Tuttle also made an appearance on "Ologies", where he led a 3 hour podcast episode about his work! We need more conservationists like him. Very insiprational, highly recommend!

Laurie: I bought this book because I was doing a multi-genre large project for my college english class and my subject was going to be about bat conservation. The book was very interesting for learning about bats but not necessarily for research purposes. What was not clear to me (perhaps it was my fault, was this was a collection of mostly stories about his past escapades. While it was fun and interesting to read, but I bought it more for real current statistics and information, not old stories. If you want to read a book about funny stories about studying bats, then this is great. Yes, it does go into a lot of scientic information about the studies, because it was not current information, I couldn't use much for my research. So if you want a research book this is probably not the best. I got an A+ on my assigment but it was due to information I gathered elsewhere. I do know a heck of a lot about bats now, though!
