Laila Ibrahim's Paper Wife: A Captivating Novel of Love, Loss and New Beginnings

Kimberleigh: Very well written and ke⁵⁵pt my attention throughout. I thoroughly enjoyed this piece of hostorical fiction. It debuts and goes into the struggles of those imigrants entering in through the West Coast as oposed to New York, New York and Ellis Island.

Grandma: My first book by this author. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Such a nice story. I have since ordered another by this author which im reading now and it has the makings of another great read. I would highly recommend this book

Jomarys Berrios: This was such a beautiful story, it kinda reminds me of Memoirs of a Geisha which I loved so much as well.
This book captivated me since page one and left me wanting more.

Crazy woman: I really enjoyed this book. It’s fun to read something where there’s a surprise thrown in, and this had several. I love reading, but it would also make a fabulous movie. It flows well and has a lot of intrigue.

upsadaisy: What an eye-opening tale of Chinese immigrants to the United States. Mei Ling was a young paper wife who, like so many others, fled poverty in China for an unknown and unforeseen life In California with a widower husband who feigned a successful life. In many ways Mei Ling was unusually fortunate though challenged by life’s daily struggles and loneliness. Her strength is heartwarming and her ability to survive is a beautiful story.

A 3 star Summer read...easy and 'relaxing ' due to the lack of effort. I much preferred Shanghai Girls-Lisa See and I can't help comparing.

Everything in the storyline seemed too 'easy'. No suspense..although I did find the book acceptable. I may read Yellow Crocus by the same Author..but I'm not sure. I expected more from this author.

lolly rugslolly rugs: Paper Wife starts strongly but then unfortunately it lost its way especially with an improbable and rushed ending - that doesn't entirely fit with the nature of the characters. I was hoping for a book that explored these difficult subjects with passion and depth, something I thought this book was lacking. the characters felt one dimensional. The topic of child/sex trafficking is relevant and this book gives a good historical account specific to Chinese immigrants to America in the 1920's that would be appropriate for teens. I did enjoy the story but not as much as I hoped.

roshini: Heart warming novel that narrates about family bonding & orphans.
It was also an inspiring story of how a woman from small back ground, fights so hard to run behind her dreams & the efforts she takes to keep her family safe.
The husband is a gem of a person who stands like a rock safe guarding her.

Karol: I was ready to award five stars until the author condoned murder. I couldn't believe it! A beautiful story of family and love and the horrors that our immigrants have been through. I hate that Americans can easily forget that, unless you're a Native American, your ancestors were immigrants! Hello!! Being a white citizen doesn't mean this country is exclusively yours. I'm thankful I'm an American and hate that any fellow American would prevent others entrance because of race. The story follows a young family to San Francisco from China and their trials. The heroine was extremely impatient and didn't think things through. The H tried to soothe his wife’s brooding and negative feelings, telling her that they had time to find a solution to their problem. Being stupid, the h kills a man and then is frightened her family might suffer from repercussions. Duh! In this story crime pays! Yes! Not only does she get away with cold blooded murder but ends up with a restaurant, her own home and educated children. Happily ever after. The story is good but I'm horrified that this writer thought that was ok for a heroic mom.
