JJ: We moved into a three story townhome this summer and the first thing I did was go online to order this safety gear. I'm a former Emt/Firefighter who is strict about keeping smoke detectors & carbon monoxide detectors operational, there are fire extinguishers on every floor and I have the cat kennel ready to go if needed quickly.
With all that planning, I knew I had to get us a ladder. I went with Kidde because they are a name brand I trust from my days working as an EMT. We used a lot of their products for our patients and I know they are quality.
Now, you cannot use it as a trial-once it is deployed, you are not supposed to re use it. You can buy two if you want to run a drill but I think simply ensuring your family can use a ladder properly (hands on the side rails not on the rungs, one step at a time) then you will be fine if you ever need to use it. Ram 1500: Never took it out of the plastic packaging. Just have it on 'standby' next to window on second floor in the event of a fire. Seems like it should work well but it is very heavy, ie. probably not practical for most kids under 10 years old.

Shawna Smith: Luckily, we haven't had to use this purchase, but I feel safer already having it in the house. It came as expected, instructions are very clear and it fits easily in a small fabric ottoman under our window, so should be required, it is readily accessible.

EH: a week before Christmas a house in my town burnt to the ground in the middle of the night killing a woman and her three children...one a newborn baby and the Grandma that was living with them. It broke the whole cities heart. And, it got me to wondering how safe my own home was. I decided it was better safe than sorry and have added this fire ladder as well as some other ER and safety items to my home. The cost of all the safety gear was worth it for the peace of mind it bought for my household. I hope I never need to deploy it but, glad it's there if need be.
