Nancy's: This book chronicles her life behind the wall and afterwards as she chose to help rebuild East Germany and unite the East and the West. Her perspective and manner in which she served her people as chancellor true leadership!

Barfield: On the whole this is an enjoyable and informative read. It is written in a very pleasant style to read and gives a great insight into Merkel as a person which is no easy task given Merkel's reluctance to reveal anything personal at all.
A few things are bit irritating. The author spent much of her childhood in Hungary and sometimes when referring to aspects of the former East Germany she interposes her own thoughts a little bit too readily, which is very common among emigré families. So yes, we all know the GDR was a Stasi state but also the East Germans felt they had lost a lot when they effectively just became new Bundesländer of West Germany. For example, not only did many people lose their jobs but many women found working extremely hard after the loss of the well structured childcare facilities of the DDR. There is little to no acknowledgment of things like this.
I understand Americans call football soccer but renaming international football competitions to include the word soccer is a step too far so basically this book is aimed at Americans.
And finally there are some inaccuracies. For example, in at least two places she proves a lack of understanding between the...
