Ubephoebe: I bought this looking for some Pilger Insight to the current world, but it is dated and I gave up as regimes have changed and global policies have changed. Disappointed in the currency but never in Pilger

Kindle Customer: A very good and well written account of US imperialism.

David Seaman: This is truth. Material like this would NEVER be taught in American or British schools. John Pilger's research surpasses all others because his primary source was to BE there.

Others have called this mandatory. I prefer to call it compulsory as every reader will be unable to put it down by the time one has reached page three.

History is usually written by the winners of war and the wealthy countries. The Media has become so commercially pressured and governments so controlled by the desire for money and power that the Western Hemisphere has changed very little since the 15th Century. When you read what Britain, the US, and Australia has done just to Indonesia, a country few of us were told about in school, you will be astounded and insensed.

Read this book.

cmvd2: Pilger is a realist with idealist principles. He's so right in that what we don't see we don't grieve over but he brings us right into the mix of all the horror and mayhem being heaped on helpless civilians who have the misfortune to occupy land coveted by the psychopathic global rulers. Unfortunately, the NWO now has us all deemed as useless eaters regardless of what we stand on and we are all to be exterminated by nuclear war no less. I haven't finished the book yet but I've already written to my MP about the psychopathic nature of the HoC rhetoric spewed in terms of terror, warmongering and nuclear suicide. I've pointed out that history, both ancient and modern, lays bear the fact that the puppet-masters of the Brits, Americans and other imperialist nations are the true terrorists manipulating the reality in which we all live. People are waking up to all the false propoganda, fake news and false flag operations and it's the likes of the John Pilgers of the world who expose all that is rotten to the core about the centuries old masters who can't be anything other than aliens. Buy everything he writes and listen to all his documentaries as he makes you feel ashamed at just...

Eric le rouge: A very good book from Pilger but which however start to date a bit.
This could be obviously considered extreme leftism but could also be simply read in the shoes of a simple human citizen of the world.
The problem with these books is that they cherry pick some of the worse examples. By choosing the worse examples, one can get really dark picture of our societies. But I see Pilger point to take the worst examples to create a shock effect which would have a higher impact on us readers. I consequently find his book too Manichean, too simplified between the bad and the good guys. It seems you have no one between which is in fact the reality.
One issue I have with his style is that he quotes many people and sometimes he is telling the story of a guy who told him a story, etc.. and you end up getting lost. Because he quotes a lot, you end up loosing track of who is the good guy and who is the bad one.
I liked the author’s idea of a victim, an aggressor and a bystander. This book made me think a bit on us westerners impact on the third world. By simply buying an Ipad, you may endanger the health of a worker thousand of kilometres away? Our
How do these things happen? Our...

Amazon Queen: I am still reading the first chapter and already I think that this is a book well worth reading. Regular as clock, we're "bombarded" with documentaries or films about the two world wars and how Hitler and his cronies were such a bunch of evil people (which they were!). However, there's little or nothing about world events which are a lot more recent and put Hitler's actions into prespective, unfortunately, he was one of many evil ones but we only seem to hear about him. Why don't we hear about other equally appalling world events again and again as a reminder? Because they happened in Asia or Africa, not in Europe or America, and therefore they don't matter, because the atrocities happened to "unpeople" (term used by the author). Also, because it was the very countries that hail themselves as the defenders of freedom and democracy against the nazies (and others since) that promoted and supported brutal regimes because it was convenient for economic and political reasons. This is an inconvenient truth, and a very sad one as well.

Spider Woman: Illusions can die hard. Mine were gone by the time I'd read this book - in part thanks to the documentaries Pilger did on these same issues. I'd expected the book to be dry, that the documentaries would be a hard act to follow. I was very wrong. Between the book and the documentaries, I'd recommend the book - though either is absolutely brilliant.

Others have covered the subject matter quite well, so there's no point in my rehashing it. The main thing to know is that what Pilger has uncovered is shocking and horrifying. Be prepared to acknowledge that your view of the world was far from reality - even if you'd thought you were a progressive and aware of what first world nations have done and are doing.

This is THE book to tell people to read if they want to believe that their country (US, UK, any other first-world nation) is a good guy, that their actions are based on doing what's right for people around the world.

Just tell them to read this book, and tell 'em that they have no idea what they're saying until they have. That goes for conservatives and liberals. If the liberals and progressives can still say that supporting their party (Democrat, Labour, SNP,...

Karun Mukherji: Author is a renowned journalist-Aussie by birth-who resides in London.Mr Pilger owing to his anti establishment views has incurred wrath, displeasure of ruling circles of UK US including his native country.

Author condemns American policies in Afghanistan,Iraq which he terms nothing but genocide.War on Iraq was motivated American greed to control that country fabulous oil weath.Similiarly author says Anglo-American attack on Afghanistan was prompted by desire to establish a foothold in resource-rich Central Asia.War on terrorism along with attempts to nab Al-qaeda supremo Osama Bin Laden has served to veil the above agenda.

Pilger exposes American hypocrisy on so-called 'War on Terror'.In the aftermath of Sep 2001 bombings efforts to bring Osama to justice without resorting to violence was sabotaged .Taliban was willing to extradite Osama to Pak city Peshawar to face trial. But President Musharraf yeilding to Washington's pressure vetoed this proposal.

Further author challenges popular view that Washington's support to Islamic fundamentalist groups was in response to Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.USA sought to destabilise Barbarak Karmal's PDPA regime because...

Stephen Zielinski: 'The New Rulers of the World' contains much outstanding journalism by John Pilger. His prose is remarkably clear and precise, his descriptions vivid and well drawn. I can easily recommend his book to anyone opposed to the unfortunate fate of the defeated peoples of the world, namely, the men and women lacking an advantageous place in the 'western imperial order.' Pilger achieves the elusive goal of letting his subjects shine through his narrative. He does this by tempering his descriptions of those victimized by the holders of wealth and power with the personal dignity and humanity of those very same people. For North Americans especially, 'The New Rulers of the World' provides salutary correctives to the obfuscations offered by their 'value-neutral' journalists.
The book's 2002 publication was a timely one as well, for war against Iraq is now certain and for reasons which should be known to those who have read Pilger's book.

Tim Johnson: John Pilger has stared into the abyss of the post World War II world and seen lies, obfuscations and Red Herrings thrown out to an extraordinarily gullible world public. You ask, "Who would do such a monstrous thing"? And surprise, surprise the name that continually surfaces is good ol', kind Uncle Sam-Uncle Sam in Indonesia, Somalia, Middle East, Central America, Chile, Caribbean, Afghanistan and now Iraq.
Pilger looks at all these places and more and the poor reader is muddied as they get pulled into a story that many of us know but probably have not stitched together as tightly as Pilger gives us. "The New Rulers of the World" is a small book of only 207 pages in the hardback version and those are small pages so the reading will not take long-the digestion, however, will take considerably longer.
As someone who has lived outside the States for some thirty years I know the difficulty of coming to grips with the monstrous nature of the country that I was born in and lived in for my early, formidable years but I also know the truth of what Pilger, himself an Australian, sees in this botched civilization that is now the world's only superpower.
The picture the reader is...
