Liz Edmonds: One off the most moving accounts of the struggle and life during World War II. I am an older American. A product of a WWII veteran but my father never spoke of his time in theatre. Ms. Grainger is an excellent storyteller and this is an intriguing and worthwhile series.

Kindle Customer com8: Well written but sometimes I felt like the author just cut off with not telling that part of the story! It was just like that part was cut off and then the story would jump from one part to a long time after. Example: the woman said yes to marriage and the next thing there getting married. Leaving out when he and his mother arriving and then getting to know everyone!
I did enjoy this story very much!

Amazon Customer: This is the 2nd book in the Star and the Shamrock series, and I loved it as much or even more than the first. The history of that time is so vividly described and having had a father who went through very similar experiences as Arielle did, albeit in the Netherlands, made this story almost personal for me. I’m so glad I discovered this series and now can’t wait to read the 3rd one.

Elske de Visch Eybergen: Daniel, Elizabeth and "Mutti" makes for an interesting story of survival, through the complexities of war. I enjoy the continued history of this Irish communities response to meeting the needs of everyone. The horrors of war then and today saddens me. As a baby coming to Canada from Nederland, I know everyone has a story. Much resonates with me, as I read of the bravery of people living in war torn countries and the stories shared by those who have survived. So thankful to Jean for bringing her characters to life.

Laurie: I loved this book. I read the first book and it was so good. This picked up where the first one left off.
I wanted to know if the mother found her children she sent off to be safe. It was so exciting to find out what the mother had to do to save herself and find her children . Would they remember her. Good reading

Dynatex: Not surprising that "Emerald Horizon" is able to improve on "The Star and the Shamrock." With the characters and settings already well-established, Grainger is free to devote much more to pure storytelling. Having declared itself neutral, Ireland is rarely mentioned in any telling of WWII except for the occasional suggestion that the ongoing belligerence with Britain left Ireland more sympathetic to the Nazis than the Allies would have liked. Perhaps and likely unfairly, Northern Ireland's contribution to the Allies in WWII is rarely treated as more than a footnote. Grainger has found a rich and largely unexplored backdrop for her historical fiction. The Star and the Shamrock series, at least the first two installments, explores the holocaust by focusing on the unheralded kindness of ordinary Germans doing what they could to protect Jews from extermination by the Nazis. Granted, Grainger may be overly generous in her depiction of the efforts of ordinary German citizens to protect Jews being fairly widespread, but more and more similar and verifiable stories are emerging in more or less documentary formats. (I heartily recommend Mark T. Sullivan's "Beneath a Scarlet Sky.")

P. Blevins: The Emerald Horizon: The Star and The Shamrock Book 2 is by Jean Grainger. Jean has surpassed herself in this book. Her writing is such that it is impossible to put the book down. Jean has managed to take the darkest point in our history to use as the background to a wonderful story of love and family. She used the idea that family doesn’t have to be by blood to create a book that grabs that idea and runs with it. During this time in history, normal families were torn asunder and people had to look for other ways to make a family. That comes across clearly in Jean’s book.
Ariella was forced to make a horrible choice in The Star and the Shamrock when she placed her two small children on the Kindertransport to take them to England. She had taken a chance on writing to an unknown relative of her husband to ask if she would take care of her children for her. She knew nothing of Elizabeth; but it was a chance for them. However, in spite of her having sent the letter, she hadn’t heard from Elizabeth and just hoped her children would be met and taken care of. Meanwhile, she had to figure out how to survive. For some unknown reason, her postmistress and neighbor, Frau Braun had...
