Amazon Customer: Not for the faint hearted as the symbols and instructions are quite different to what I’m used to but I’m very keen to try one

meghavarshini: I have knitted 4 items with patterns from the book. It is a lovely book to browse through and be inspired.
Downside: The pattern symbols are tough to follow. This is because the book's master index for symbols and their descriptions are in the first couple of pages. Before knitting, I have to create a custom key for my pattern by looking up the pattern number against the master index, finding each symbol and copying down the description on a separate sheet of paper so I can easily reference it.

Martin: Das Buch bietet viele verschiedene Muster an und durch die Grafiken sind diese auch leicht zu folgen (wenn man bereits Kenntnisse hat) Ansonsten werden die einzelnen Stiche auch erklärt.

ACK: These are all things I've read in the reviews about this book and my opinion about them:
Let's start by considering the book's title:
JAPANESE Knitting Stitch Bible, please excuse the use of uppercase but it's relevant. The Japaneses use a totally different way to communicate, have you seen their written language? it is full of symbols not individual characters forming words. All of this to say that you can't expect a 'western style' book when the key word in the title is 'Japanese'. This is to all people that I've seen here complaining about the book lacking words, you just made a misinformed purchase perhaps?
Somebody else said the book is only for continental knitters, I disagree, some photos at the end of the book seems to indicate a continental knitter but other than that the charts don't refer to any specific method. Once you know how to read the symbols it is irrelevant if you are thrower or contiental or combination
Other people 'complain' about the busyness (excessively detailed or decorated) of the patterns and found them useless. For an experienced knitter is disneyland! we can pick and choose the bits here and there and create wonderful things,...

Fine Artist/Jeweler-545: I have both her first and second books. I love these charted patterns. It would be nice if they were in a binding that makes enlarging the patterns easier, or if every chart was scaled the same so that I can more easily cut and paste sections together. That said, these books are AWESOME. I am a committed life long learner of almost anything. I rehabilitated a badly injured hand by taking up knitting. Bored by regular knitting , I started looking into complex works. There are specific instructions in the back for especially complex stitches. The charts take a bit of getting used to, and a sticky note keeps my place in the pattern. I can’t praise this book enough. Complex stitches show up best in a lighter, solid, color. A dark or veriagated yarn would hide all your hard work. Have fun!

a reader: I returned this, so here are my reasons for the 5 stars: The stitch patterns are extraordinary and impressive. You definitely won’t find these stitches anywhere else. The woman is obviously a technical and knitting genius. The symbol explanations are extensive and very clear, as are the charts. I don’t feel comfortable taking stars off just because I personally don’t like what she has designed.
To help you decide if this is a book for you, I am a very accomplished lace, cable and twist stitch knitter and if you are too, or are looking to up your game, these stitches will give you the challenge you may be looking for. But you better like very ornate stitch patterns as well.
I returned because, for my taste, they are over the top ornate. All of them. Bobbles and beads and wraps and lace (lots of different lace stitches) and twists and cables, often all together. To be fair, I’ve never been a fan of bobbles or beads or wraps, so if you are and are also a fan of the ornate, this is probably a great choice for you. I know I would never use any of these stitches. For anything. Apologies, but it just felt like overkill to me.

Amidanshi: As a knitter and also as a fan of Japanese culture and Japan in general, I knew I had to have this book. I had been trying for some time to find more on the web about Japanese stitches, and I did find bits and pieces but nothing with a good, solid foundation from which to start. So, even though I have been quite disappointed with the majority of new knitting books I've recently purchased, I was cautiously optimistic that this volume would in fact be just what I was hoping -- and when it arrived, my hopes were met and well exceeded!
Enclosed in this softcover, oversized book are quite a few new and unusual stitches, as well as a multitude of stitch patterns that are far more complex than most any Western knitter is accustomed to seeing. Some patterns even include crochet mixed into the knitting! Stitch patterns and even single stitch "groups" can be complex: some, such as the "double decrease right over purl", are complicated enough that instead of explaining the symbol inline, Shida-sensei provides step-by-step, illustrated instructions later in the volume. After explaining the symbols, the remainder of the book is dedicated to stitch patterns, primarily large repeats (50...

clara: Il manuale è illustrato benissimo, ovviamente non per neofiti, ma le spiegazioni sono intuitive, utilizzano chart. Per me il migliore manuale da qualche anno a questa parte.
