Peter: A simple o-ring or cork/fiber washer in the cap would solve the problem. Without it, it leaks persistently. A shame as it's an easy to use, simple oiler.

KatieKatie: I bought one of these on Amazon some months ago, favoring the simplicity of the 'old school' design over the more popular trigger-pump type oilers that give grief with leaks and poor tolerance to some lubricants. Initial reaction to this device was positive... until today. I grabbed the oiler to lubricate the drawer slides in a bedroom bureau, which required some upside-down use of the can. Ever with this simple design, it's possible to 'squirt up' by filling the stem pointing down, and then quickly dispensing through the stem pointing up before the oil runs back down into the base. But not today.
Evidently the gasket/seal is made of a rubber compound that doesn't like motor oil (40wt, non-detergent). The gasket has deformed over the months and is disintegrating, and the can leaks badly when inverted as its use generally requires. I may try cutting a gasket out of illustration board; once a paper-based gasket gets saturated it holds a seal pretty well.
