My eyes aren't what they used to be and this large color screen was just what I needed. Screen visibility in daylight is better than anything else I've seen. I bought the 600 versus the 600T because I don't care much for the 100K pre-installed maps. The difference in price is about equivalent to buying the 100K US map set if I ever want it. I bought the Garmin Hunt View 24K map set for my state and it is a great topo map with the added bonus of satellite view, which is what I mostly use in the field. The Montana 600 has very fast satellite acquisition and map scrolling. I love that all the GPS features are accessed by touch screen as good as any smart phone, and you don't have to mess with buttons or toggles.
I have rated the Montana 600 a FIVE star but there is one issue that has nothing to do with the GPS unit's performance. It does not come with a case clip on carabiner for attaching to your pack or belt like most Garmin's do. The only option I have found for this unit is a fat, clunky case that comes with a strap and carabiner and the quality looks questionable. So be sure to keep it in a pocket with a closure. I am going to try and figure out...

William E. Kline: Be aware that this seller has a deceptive description of this device. If you read the ad you would think that you are getting a new unit, however the unit that they send you will be a refurbished one. I only found this out when I had an issue and went to Garmin for help.

I bought this in May (2013). The one I was sent suffered some kind of software seizure and subsequently couldn't find its way to locations 50 miles away. However, the Garmin technicians sent me a new one very quickly and without argument and this new one has worked flawlessly since then.
Its first real test was a big, triangular trip from London to Portsmouth - Caen - Le Mans - Saumur - Biarritz - San Sebastian - Pamplona - Zaragoza - Barcelona - L' Escala - Montpellier - Limoges - Orleans - Caen - Portsmouth back to London, on my Bonneville. It sits in a Garmin Rugged Mount attached to a short (2") bar mount attached to a ball fitting that replaces one of my handlebar clamp bolts. In this mount it sits right in the centre of my bars, below the clocks, easily visible and obscuring nothing, without taking my eyes off the road.
It worked perfectly for the entire 2,300 miles. There were only 2 kinds of error I made: 1) Getting captivated by the scenery to the point I missed my turning (that happened a few times, but the Montana guided me back nicely). 2) The local authority had built a new road so recently you could still smell hot tar and so the road...

A. Pfau:
This was our 4th Garmin GPS (having owned GPSMap 60CSx, 305, Etrex). Bought this to replace the GPSMap60CSx as our primary hiking/backpacking device. The GPSMap works well and is a proven model but I find interfacing with it cumbersome and the map difficult to read. The touch screen access on the Montana is excellent and works very well, much like my iphone which is what I was looking for. The landscape/portrait display is very nice and works well. I found screen brightness acceptable in most all lighting conditions. Not as bright as an iphone but I'll accept this for longer battery life.
First thing to do when getting the Montana is download the latest software upgrade. Like some others, the compass would not calibrate until I did this. After the upgrade, calibration went fast and worked as expected. Using the MicroSD card with preloaded 24K Topo maps from my GPSMap worked flawlessly, just insert the card and the Montana read it perfectly. Downloading and uploading GPS data to Base Camp software also worked well with no problems. Everytrail.com was also able to detect the GPS and upload with no issues.
The prevailing issue with the...

J. R. StCyr:
I have a Garmin Oregon and am very happy with it except in one area; the screen. It's not as large or as readable as I would like. Along comes the Montana series and problem solved. The screen is significantly easier to read in all lighting conditions and its larger size minimizes the need to put on reading glasses (one of the banes of advancing years). The additional pixels are very useful when data fields displayed since you still have a lot of screen real estate available to view the underlying map.
I only have two complaints. The first is the size of the unit. It's about half again as heavy as the Oregon (11 ounces versus 16) and about half again as thick. That said, I consider it a fair trade for the increased readability and run time (it holds 3 AA batteries versus 2 in the Oregon). My other complaint seconds what another reviewer pointed out, the lack of a carabiner clip. I'll probably just loop some parachute cord through the slot in the unit but for $500 Garmin should have included something.
Some users have had issues with the 2.6 firmware upgrade. I applied it and haven't had any issues though to be fair I'm not using geocaching...
